I deciding between a denon dl-103 low output mc and dl-160 ho version.

From post elsewhere the dl-103 needs 60 db of gain, not sure what the mc section of the tempest gives.

I use the Tempest with the DL-103R. The preamp has enough gain for the 103R's low output voltage of 0.25mV, volume dial is at 12 o'clock for my listening level. That being said, I strongly recommend you contact Klaus of Odyssey and get his particular point of view.

I think Klaus said to me that it can safely handle things down to 0.5mv or so.  If it has 60db gain, it should handle a bit lower than that with relative ease. 

As it's solid state, there are a lot less noise issues with it as you turn up the volume (compared to tubes).  Probably more important than the gain itself on the Tempest Extreme is the correct input impedance to make your Denon 103 sing....I've read the trick is to load it at 100 ohms.  But, based on internal DC resistance, I'd think it best at about 300-400 ohms (10x internal resistance is typically about right)

The Klaus-man would know all this if your manual doesn't state it.

No, the manual does not indicate the resistance either. I assume it is standard 100 ohm.

So, Klaus or someone from Ody, help us out here.

From what I've read over on AA, most use a load around 20-40 ohms.  I haven't had a chance to set my 103R up yet, but when I do I will post what works best in my system.

It had enough gain for my .4 mv Shelter 501 but the 47k ohm setting was not a good match for it; 100 ohms has been the best setting.

I see no way of doing this.  Also , I found the 47k ohm spec on Singapore website but that is likely for the MM section not the MC. I think 100 ohm is standard for MC but ody may differ.

I decided to try an AT OC9 MK II instead of the denon. A step below your shelter 501.

Correct.  MM is 47 k.
Standard MC  without plugs is around 10k,  but because of the Dual phono inputs,  we can easily put in different plugs,   and adjust to anything you want.

I checked on audiogon and most say the OC-9 cartridge needs between 20 and 100 ohms to sound most natural, ie best bass and not overly bright.   

What are these plugs you speak of and where do they get installed ?

system does not sound right with 10000k load on the oc9 cart.

Someone from ODY please hook me up with what I need to drop impedance to 60
ohms on the mc input.

The recommended load impedance for the AT-OC9 as specified by Audio Technica is 20 ohms. The Tempest standard MC section load resistor is 10 ohms. You have two options...insert (solder) a 10 ohms resistor in series in your RCA IC's (positive on both channels), or send the unit back to Klaus to change the load resistor inside the unit. In reality, the AT-OC9 should sound just fine with 10 ohms...with 20 ohms it will sound a little softer (less volume)!
