Looking for sub to go with MMG
« on: 26 Feb 2007, 06:26 am »
Well I have been looking into some Magnepan MMG speakers for a simple living room hifi setup. But I listen to all kinds of music and I think I would need a sub. What to do guys recommend. I don't want to spend too much and made something small like 10" or dual 8's. please post links if possible.

Thanks

ACI Force XL should be right at the top of your list! Excellent performance, beautiful wood finish! Check out their Circle to learn more.

:D Looks like we are after the same thing. Keep an eye on this thread, along the way:

I used an M&K D125 with the Maggie 3As with great success. I ran the maggies full range and dialed in sub to match. You can find one used for about $300 or so . If you can find an old Janis sub your really in luck. This was the cats meow years ago.

I am second to the ACI Force subwoofer (either the XL or the old style look, their internal components are all identical anyway).  Get a used pair for stereo sub and it will cover and exceed your LF expectation.   :thumb: :thumb:

I've been considering the same with my (modded with full top-and-bottom Mye Stands and outboard crossovers) MMG's.

Seems to me it's a two fold problem with the small Maggies...they don't have a lot of bass and the panels are hugely distorted at low frequencies (affecting every part of the sonic picture from them from bass to midrange).

I think this guy has the right idea: http://cgi.ebay.com/Magnepan-high-pass-modules-for-smaller-Maggies-and-subs_W0QQitemZ200082478456QQihZ010QQcategoryZ3276QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Taking everything out from 90-100hZ and then blending the sub with adjustable crossover into the mix is the answer.  Just rolling a sub in there still leaves very distorted bass performance from the panels themselves in tact. Eliminating them would seem to be quite beneficial.

For the money, I think AV123's Rocket ULW-10 would seem a hard act to beat; sealed box (for tightest / fastest bass), mucho brutish internal amp and (very novel) a SOS or Speaker Optimization System - an automatic 1-band parametric EQ.

Special price for links thru Audioholics site, too : http://www.audioholics.com/productreviews/loudspeakers/OnixRocketULW-10Reviewp1.php

A guy from AA, "Duke" , has built a dedicated maggie/quad sub system which is reviewed here.
Duke has a demo set going about and I am on the list...
