I need wireless SB3 help
« on: 25 Feb 2007, 03:33 pm »
I just got a new laptop computer from work and I can't get slimserver to connect while the computer is wireless.  It connects just fine when I have the computer wired to the router.  I checked the computer's firewall and it shows that 3483 and 9000 ports are exceptions.

Also, I have all of my music stored on a 500GB external hard drive.  Is there a way I can make it wireless so I don't have to wire it to the laptop?

A couple of questions.

- Is the laptop set up with static IP?
- If you have another PC in the house, can you ping the laptop when it's wireless?

You might check your ip address when you go wireless and see if your firewall is blocking communication.  Type 'ipconfig' in a command prompt.  The only difference I can think of between wired and wireless is the router assigned ip address.

For your hard drive to be on the network, it needs to be attached to a computer or a network storage device.  Not sure why you would want it to be wireless, unless you need physical access to it.

You need to reconfigure the SB from Scratch. Go to the start menu and configure it step by step. You will also need to key in WEP settings if used.

Yeah, I already did that many times.  WEP is configured.  Thanks for the help though.

No, I don't have it set up with a static.  I have never been able to figure out how to do that.

I don't have another PC.

When I go through the set up of the SB3 it shows that it does connect to the wireless network.  I just can't connect to slimserver when the computer is wireless.

I want the hard drive to be wireless so I don't have to physically connect it to the laptop when I want to listen to music.  I'm looking for ultimate laziness and comfort

Pugs:
What version of Slim Server software are you using? You might also disable the Windows firewall ( I'm assuming you have a Windows based system not a Mac ) along with any other firewall you have running as these are the most common cause of the problem you're describing. I've found the best way to reset the Squeezebox ( which I'm also assuming you have ) is to unplug it for a minute then go through the setup routine. Hope that helps.

I can't disable the firewall.  It must be because it's a work computer.  I have powered off the SB3 many times and gone through the set up.  It doesn't work.

The Firewall should have a learn mode. Can you activate it and it will give you a notice to approve to the SB? I had to do this during my initial setup.

OK.  So the laptop is the ONLY PC in the house.  And, you don't want to have to connect the external drive to the laptop?  How is it going to function then?  If you have a router and the external drive is capable of acting as NAS, then it could be done.  Otherwise, it will need to be connected to the laptop or it has no access to the network.

IMO, firewall is not the issue.  If it was, then you wouldn't connect whether wired or not.

I am assuming you're connecting the external drive to the laptop via a USB port?

Click on Start
Click on Control Panel
Click on Security Center
Click on Firewall
Then Click on Exceptions
Then Add the Slimserver / SB as an added Program

Get a Network-attached storage (NAS), connect it directly to a router and map it as a network drive on your laptop. A good NAS will cost you at least $500 and up .... or you can build one for around $60 like this one.

or this nice one for a little bit more money.

Your PC will get a different IP address depending upon whether your PC is wired or wireless.  If you had things working with a wired PC, you may have to run through the squeezebox setup routine again when you switch to wireless because your IP changed.

What is the IP address of your PC when you are wireless?  Can you surf to the Internet when you are wireless?  Can you ping the squeezebox when you are wireless?

Wow, something happened with my router when I was trying figure this whole thing out and I couldn't connect to the internet at all if I was going through my router. Two calls to the cable company and one to Linksys and I finally got it working again.

Still no wireless connection to slimserver, but I guess it doesn't really matter if I have to have my hard drive connected anyway.  It's not really practical to carry my hardrive around the house.  At least I learned a lot today from troubleshooting my router issue.

As was pointed out before, you can build/buy a really cheapie PC and leave it wherever and connected to the HD.  That would accomplish what you want - OR - you can get a network enabled drive that will plug directly into the router (assuming it's a multi-port router - if not, you'll need to get a switch)
