This was an e-mail I received minutes after having placed a receiver for sale on Craig's List. The ad on CL asked for the buyer to respond to my ad in AudiogoN, as does the ad I placed here, but he chose to contact me through CL. I'm asking $675, but this guy wants to pay $750

I told him I had reported him to the authorities. Are there authorities I can report him to? Who are these guys anyways?

It is difficult to accuse these potential scammers of a scam because you have not gotten scam already. The best course is to ignore the dude who will attempt something similar on another person.

I think CL does remove classifieds, but I do not know what might their policy be.

I tried the FTC website. They do have a complaints page, but nothing that deals with this sort of scam. Maybe I should have allowed him to send his bogus payment so that I would have something more to report.

Well let's see; we've got clumsy English, non-specific reference to "this item", the hard-to-swallow idea that it's a gift, and an offer to pay something besides the stated price. Hmmm...

I wouldn't bother reporting it, I'd just trash the e-mail and move on. It sounds like it could be just a canned script that's being sent out anyway. It's still good for a chuckle, though. I particularly like the line, "powered by United State Postal Service"! That's a hoot!

I posted an Odyssey amp on Chicago Craigs List a few mos ago and had the exact same thing happen. Ignore this and be very careful on Craigs List.

Craigslist has a scam reporting link; use that. Maybe nothing will happen but you will at least feel better. I would go further but I have to reply to an email from someone who is sending me $22 million USD which was embezzled by Saddam Hussein and found in iraq after the US invasion. I am going to spend it on audio equipment. Hey CE2, I am gonna make your AVA setup look like a boom box!

(I would say g****o blaster, but I don't want to cause anyone to have a conniption.)

But seriously, I have seen a website with emails posted by people who string scammers along, wasting their time by sending 8-10 emails back and forth, pretending to want to cooperate. Think I saw the link here somewhere,anybody know?
