 You could also cover the complete panel with a good acoustic grill cloth for a more appealing appearance. At $30 for 12 pieces, it doesn't seem like too much of a risk

If it's open in the back....maybe you could "stuff it".....

Perhaps with the acoustical pattern, if there is space behind the pattern, it could be filled with acoustical recycled cotton that would add to the absorption qualities although I think that the pattern is meant to disperse more than absorb sound.

Bryan, I wonder if those would accept some sort of urethane where it would actually reflect the waves. After you applied a thick coat of urethane, you could then paint them the color of your walls.

I think with the design intended to reflect rather than absorb, there should not be too much concern about the sound bouncing off whatever hard material is used behind them.

 This reminds me of people using fast-food drink trays for panels but I think the drink trays are much thicker and denser.

 My final concern would be fire issues. I wonder if they need to or would provide a MSDS (material saftey data sheet) with them

Good point about the fire issues but not much different than most wall paper I would suspect.
Better than most polyurethane foam.

I'd want to see the product and see how dense/stiff it really is.  A coating on the front might help the paintability.  If there are cavities in the back, which I suspect there are, then I'd likely try something like fiberglass resin in the back to fill in the cavities and provide more stiffness.  Anything water based would likely be an issue with a paper based product.
