« on: 22 Feb 2007, 08:37 pm »
A friend asked me to look into getting him a pair of speakers and installing them (he is clueless) he likes my set up of paradigm 40's But he wants towers in wood (Oak-cherry) and wants NO sub . I said get the Paradigm 60's but may not have enough low end without a sub .they will be used for music and HT .$2000 budget
Driving them with a Denon 3505 AVR

I would look at some of the manufactures here on a/c.  Jim Salk makes a very nice 1801f and I know Rick Craig of Selah Audio can make something special in that price range.

There are others too, just to name a few; ACI, AV123, GR Research, Odyssey Audio.

I have a pair of Paradigm Studio 60 v3s for sale.  I am letting them go for $1000.  They have a dent in one tweeter but I cannot hear the difference.  I will order a replacement if a buyer wants and sell them for $1100.  That leaves you plenty of money for a kickass sub.  Also I use them 100% for music and I have never wanted for bass.  For movies that would be different.  I think they have a pretty good bottom end. Drop me a email if you are interested: krisadams at gmail dot com

just saw he wants no sub

I agree that for $2k this would be an excellent choice.

Of course some of the new AV123 X-series towers might be an attractive choice as well.

I think they would have enough bass for 2 channel.

Zu Druid provides everything you want and then some .......  except for wood veneer. They sell used at, or just below, $2K.

Without a sub for music is easy Druids as macrojack suggested. For movies and music Definitive Technology BP 7004 @ $799 each. Plenty of bass for explosions, helicopters and the like. They also have a very good synergy with the Denon. They do not have a wood veneer however you could glue a wood veneer to the sides easily. I may be wrong but $2000 budget for full range 20- 20000HZ without a sub, does not offer much in choice. You need a sub for the AV part and the music, that is your decision depending on your taste of music.
    Hope this helps

Klaus has a new Odyssey "mini-me" version of the Lorelei's at $1700 (in cherry) that should be killer.  I have the Onix Rocket 760's ($1500) in my theater which are also very nice and great looking too.  Tom

Spendor S5e (new) or Spendor S8e (used). I've owned the S8e -- best floorstander I've heard.

Revel Concerta F12 is going to be very tough to beat.

What would the budget need to move up to for FULL RANGE 20-20000HZ ?

You might want to have your Friend look at an AC members (Gongos)RM2's at $2500 obo.

They will do 20-20.

My speakers are EFE Technology T-36 speakers. I'm not sure what Ed's price is on these now, but mine ran me about $1,500. Flat response down to 31Hz...with a frequency sweep I can hear bass from the listening position down to 26Hz before complete rolloff, and the basses are firm, tight, and never boomy. The 5-speaker system I have was built by Ed Frias, and it is great for HT, but I don't have a sub because I listen mostly to music.

Oh yeah, and WAF is way high on Ed's speakers, if that's a consideration.
