Tri amping...puzzled?
« on: 19 Feb 2007, 02:19 pm »
Quick question regarding the use of 3 seperate amplifiers in a 2ch system.  I have an Electrocompaniet ECI3 integrated with preout which I am using as a preamp only.  It is connected to a pair of stereo Odyssey Khartago amps which are used in a vertical biamp config.  Out of curiosity, could I triamp with this setup?  Specifically, I'm wondering if I could use the Electrocompaniet Integrated on the tweeter network and feed the mids and bass with the Khartago amps.  My concern is with volume levels between the different amps (Odyssey vs. Electro.) Do folks who use, say a tube amp on top and a SS amp on bottom, need to be able to contol levels of the amps individually to get the right SPL balance as a whole?

Confused

You could, but there are a few issues to tackle.  If you know the input sensitivity of the khartago's and the EC amp that would help immensely.  You then make a voltage divider for one of the amps to match the other (the more sensitive amp gets the lowered voltage). Then there is the issue of whether your preamp can drive all three amps in parrallel which can be quite a tough load.  If you know some specs on the preamp section it would help a great deal too.

Thanks Josh.  I think I will leave well enough alone.
