dBpoweramp Ripper Convert!
« on: 19 Feb 2007, 02:23 am »
Wow, I was a diehard EAC user up until this morning when I finally tried out dBpoweramp!

This software is awesome!  It is REALLY fast and checks with AccurateRip after every track.  If the disc is not in the AccurateRip database or a track's CRC doesn't tie to what's in AccurateRip, it will start re-ripping the track a number of (user-defined) times.

Seriously, it cranked through one of the discs I tested at between 20x and 30x....all tracks verified on AccurateRip.

This is with a Plextor Premium external drive.

Anyway, I HIGHLY recommend giving it a shot:

I use there converter for .wav to .flac after I rip with EAC. I prefer to do them sepereate so far.

Why?

One word of caution about Flac created with dbpoweramp.  There must be a difference in codec used b/c Flac files created with dbpoweramp is not playable on certain hardware, for example, the Meizu portable DAP's and certain Cowan players, while same files converted to Flac using Flac Frontend (through EAC) play fine on everything.

I plan to use a SqueezeBox3. DB's converter lets you choose the level of lossless compression. I can always switch back to .wav and convert again if I need too.

My computers is just a laptop so doing converting and ripping at the same time makes the computer unusable.

Bill, I'm using the Reference version.

I love the ripping methodology employed here - only rip at slow(er) speeds when necessary (i.e., when the CRCs don't match what's in AccurateRip or the disc is not in the AccurateRip database).

I've had no problems with .FLAC playback when playing the files through Foobar.  I need to try them in my ipod.

Jim,

I apologize if it's clearly stated on the site (if so, I missed it), but is there an OSX version of the software?

I've been using MAX w/ good-to-very good results, but there's no such thing as copies that are too perfect.... know what I mean?

Thanks.

db's free converter with level 8 flac works fine with SqueezeBox3.

Jim, sorry I didn't see your post!  I don't believe there is version for OSX.

Can you compare CRCs with MAX?  I think that goes a long way to ensuring you have "good" rips.

I found out about dBpoweramp last month when I was building my new dedicated music server. A friend recommended to me. Man oh man, I love this software. I ripped about 80 CDs to FLAC over a weekend and use Meedio as my player front end. I added a built in 7" LCD screen to the front of the Antec case, a wireless remote and wireless card. Now it's a portable source for any of my systems or especially handy for audio meets.

I also switched to dBpoweramp reference recently and I'm satisfied. With EAC I was never sure what the correct settings were, maybe paranoia on my part.

I still mainlu use plextools for my FLAC ripping, however I use dbpoweramp when converting FLAC to MP3's for our mp3 players. Its fast and it easily allows me to select VBR 284 as my compression of choice.

The new dbpoweramp ripper does look better than the current best software (plextools and EAC) at least according to developer's testing. He ("spoon") does sound like he knows what he is talking about and I would trust his results.

This request is only mildly on topic...

After all the good reviews I've heard, I decided to try dBpoweramp and it seems a mighty piece of software, BUT, I only have sporadic net access on the 'puter with this on and I need cd info. I downloaded the freedb offline database, extracted the whole thing and still cant get any disc info shown.

Any info or guides on getting this to work? I only found one piece of advice and that was posted in 2002, obviously it was out of date and useless.

Nick (confused by the simplicity. After all I find EAC easy <but slow>)

As you say, it is pretty simple. I guess you do have freedb checked in the "meta" options. That or a firewall problem is all I can think of. At the beginning I also had a few instances of no cd info, but the problem apparently solved itself.

I just started using this today. This is much easier to use than EAC. Terrific software! :thumb:

If you have EAC configured already, is there a benefit to using dBpoweramp?

ctviggen, one word: SPeeeeeeeeeeeeeed.

EAC is so much slower than db.

Think I'll just stick with EAC then.

cheers all.

Nick.

I think so...i've been using EAC for a few years and a buddy just turned me onto dbpoweramp.

not much time to get to know it yet, very cool that folks think it might be as good or better than EAC in terms of SQ.  I have no issues with EAC, but like another poster mentioned...its tough to know if you are doing it right.

at some point i'll add Rockbox to my Imod...when that happens having dbpoweramp's easy FLAC conversion should be a good thing.
