It is obvious to me that Srajan knows hat he is doing. If I had a review publication, I would have snapped you up. Your open mind, thoroughness and empiricism are very important assets and your unbounded enthusiasm is  what we need more of in audio. Go for it!!!!

Mike,
Congratulations! This seems almost a natural step given your thoughtful posts and reviews here.

I'm wondering, though (not at all a criticism) how you are going to reconcile your current system with the duties of a reviewer. What I mean is that you seem to have mastered the TacT set-up with your subs, but your system maybe doesn't seem to be "reviewer-friendly".

It's the old problem - Don't some reviewers like to have brutally analytical (and most likely practically unlistenable) systems to better evaluate new stuff, with amps that can handle a wide range of gear etc? (From what I've seen at 6moons, though, this is not the norm, thankfully). Is your use of the TacT going to complicate (or enhance, even?) your life as a reviewer? Or will will you need to jettison it on occasion, possibly altering your frame of reference?

Are you going to primarily focus on sources and therefore be able to leave the rest of your highly-optimized system intact?

I hope you understand what I'm getting at!  It just seems like you have a somewhat specialized system that might limit the range of gear you can evaluate? (I don't mean at all that your ability to judge sound quality has been affected by the TacT EQ, OK?)

Boy, I hope this comes out in the inquisitive way I intend and not a criticism!

No criticism at all.  That was one of the first things I thought of when Srajan asked me to join.  In fact, though I've never really thought about being a formal reviewer, I always thought this would be a significant limitation.  Our discussions of this very issue led to the Outside tag.  The thought was to specify that "this ain't your momma's Victrola but here's my view anyhow".

I have found that even though the TacT does change the sound in the room, it does not impose its own character on DACs and amps.  Cables could probably fit here too.  Since transports are upsampled to 24/96 internally, maybe they're not as good a candidate.  TacT has a new feature available (which I've not yet loaded) allowing correction of only the subwoofer outputs, so the rest could be evaluated on a no-EQ basis.

Also, I will soon be receiving a Rane parametric EQ loaner to check out and compare with my TacT solution.  Fun and games.   :D

On the scenery, that's tame for Washington State.  They don't let us take our mountain bikes up in the high, high country.

Thanks for the good vibes!

miklorsmith,

Cool man. Best of luck.

I've had the opportunity lately to audition a bunch of gear, and listen to a bunch of vastly different set ups in the last few months. I don't know how in the hell I could possibly write a review on any of it. They all have merit, in one way, shape or form. I have my preferences, how could I be sure my own bias is not going to judge something unfairly?

My hat is off to anyone who can write reviews. I don't think I could do it.

Cheers

Anybody could do it.  The real question is who in the world would want to do it.
