Analog vs digital performance of Bryston SP2
« on: 8 Feb 2007, 05:37 am »
For 2-channel music, has anybody found the digital side of Bryston SP2 performs just as well as the analog by-pass?  I would like to soon wirelessly hook the SP2 to my computer which can act as a music server.  The problem here, at least with my equipment setup, is that SP2 digital does not have as much detail a sound as that of the analog side which obvious needs a regular CD player.  My source is the Meridian 596, with its analog connection to the SP2 using Linn interconnect, and with its digital link using Madrigal MDC2.  So am I stuck with a CD player?  Thank you.

I think you are stuck with the CD player. Are you using lossless music files ?

Hi, what is "lossless" file?  I'm thinking of converting CD tracks to uncompressed wave file, if the uncompressed file is what you mean by "lossless".  However at this point I haven't done anything to the computer yet.  No, I am not tapping in the Meridian lossless transfer.  For that would require special connection with a Meridian preamp.

I just make comparison between SP2 analog and digital mode using 1 source, which is the Meridian CD player.  I was hoping that somebody would have first hand information that either shows: (1) SP2 digital performs just as well with specific peripheral equipment; or (2) somehow the Meridian 596 digital side does not do as well as its analog side although signal must first goes through its digital side before entering its internal DAC for analog conversion; or (3) the Levinson MDC2 digital interconnect is nowhere near as good as the Linn analog interconnect.  All of this must be first hand knowledge however.  I really want to head toward the music server route since it's future of music.  Yet I don't want to buy nice wireless equipment until I know for sure that SP2 digital could perform just as well.  It is a tall order since SP2 analog mirrors after Bryston top of the line analog preamp.
