Best inexpensive record clamp for Rega?
« on: 8 Feb 2007, 03:28 am »
Hey!

Okay, guys I'm thinking of getting a record clamp for my Rega Plarnar platter but don't know which one is the best

There seems to be couple of them out there. Like KAB and Clearaudio of which are not expensive.

But.... is there others? And which one would be a good one?

Anyway, comment and experience will be appreciated :D

Take care,

I take a side with Mr. van Alstine on this one....a 1.5" Longhorn stabilizer across the body of the cartridge will be more beneficial to most setups than any clamp.

A 'pig' clamp can still be used with the Longhorn...but a larger clamp cannot be used (the cartridge will bump into it at end of record).  The Longhorn has proved more beneficial than a clamp in my setup.

I had a neat rubber one called the PIG (I think) dirt cheap if you can find one somewhere. It was a fairly common offering back in the 80's and was especially good for short spindles. Easy to put on and off. Record clamping, threaded or otherwise, vacuum clamping etc, used to make for endless discussions back in them dark ages. Then Peter Belt came along...now add the kind of mat into the mix and it's real fun! I had a Rega for a long time and use a thin felt mat andthe Pig. Had to use the Pig otherwise there was slipage between the mat and the platter. God this stuff makes me feel old (and melancholic)

I hate to bring this up again....but, I bought a 99 cent hockey-puck and drilled a 9/32" hole in the center for spindle clearance. It looks kinda cool and it works.

Wayner is right, the hockey puck works wonders and its cheap. The only thing I'd add to it would be three of those clear rubber feet, the small ones. You know, the ones you can pick up in Walmart that come on a sheet of like 20. They are those little peel and stick jobbies.

Hey Buddy, you'd be the only guy in the Rave with a Rangers (or Devils depending on your team of choice) puck clamp  :thumb:
