Anyone using McIntosh amps?
« on: 6 Feb 2007, 12:28 pm »
Hello all I am still trying to settle in on an amp.  I was considering the Berning and Dodd but I need more power.  My short list is now

1)Moscode 600 with all modds would be about $3,000.00                  Used  300 watts a side 8 ohms, $1000. for amp, $2,000 for modds
2)VanAlstine UFV 550                                  $2,200.00                  New   250 watts          8 ohms
3)McIntosh (too many model numbers )     $2,000.00 - $5,000.00  Used  200-500 watts    8 ohms

I have a Moscode 600 coming but would like to hold off on the modds until I can hear a McIntosh.  I would love to hear the VanAlstine but Frank is about 6 weeks out on delivery so I will have to decide between the Mcintosh and Moscode for now and then compare the VanAlstine.

Does anyone in our group have a fairly high powered McIntosh we could listen too on my Alphas?

Thanks and all the best, Guy

The Fet Valve Ultra 550 amp is $2199, not $2500.  I can probably turn one for you in 30 days.

Our clients tend to keep our equipment running for 20 years or more.  A short wait for better music and a nice cost savings should not be critical in the overall scheme of things.

Regards,

Frank Van Alstine

Thanks for the note Frank.  I changed the numbers.  Your amp is in the top three the wait is not a problem but I can use the time to evaluate the other two.  And as far as cost savings yours would be the best buy :D  The other two amps will cost more.  Money is always a concern but as with most of us if we hear something that works well with our set up we seem to find a way to afford it :duh:

Sorry, I can't give you any new leads, Guy, but I'm curious... who are you looking at to perform mods to the Moscode 600?

I've been curious about the Ultra 550 for a while now and asked around before in the DFW area, but never had any luck.

Good luck with your search!

Thanks, Guy!

Did George give you any idea how the modded 600 compares to the current 401H?

Good luck with your search!

I've a MC202 only 200W in 2,4&8 Ohm load very good match with modded Silverline Audio SR-12 wide and very deep soundstage way out to the front yard  aa  dead on vocals and finess in the high. For $2-$5K you could have the MC402 400W pc very popular in the audio community ~4-4.5K . Good luck.
