I don't understand.  You and the Tweeter guys are holding your ears from the digititis, you mention the midrange is only 2 dimensional, you state that the blacks aren't as black as you are used to......then you give it 9's and 8's!  I mean, 9's and 8's are very high marks.  I'm totally confused.  What do you give the Meitner stack, or Alex's NWO 2.5 (a $25k machine), 14's and 15's?   You are NOT what I would call a critical, tough grader.  I wish I had you in British Lit in college.

Steve

Obviously you prefer the apl denon over the shulte denon. Do you also prefer the modwright over the shuylte denon also.?

Are you using Gary's new battery pre or  his previous reference preamp?

One more question for you if you don't mind. Have you ever tried other power cords with the 120's othe than the purist? I;m sure the purist are great but a little too much money for me. Wondering what other cords could you recommend with for the 120's.

Tks

I guess I could be your college prof.  But I do not think you would like me then.  This is a high end player, just not MY cup of tea.  It is too analytical, for me, but, comparing to SS sources I have owned, and compared to, it is a top notch player. Much in the way the DCS/elgar/purcell stack of 2 years ago sounded, this is my reminder.  I could NOT live with either.  I have found modding to be a path which I believe in.  I see by your system, you are in agreement.  I dunno what you would rate your MOdwright 999es platinum on a scale of 1-10, but, to me, musically, it would be over 8.  On a sczle of 1-10, I could not rate ANYTHING over 10, if yaknow whatImean.  I do not yet have the NWO 2.5, but I certainly hope it will be a SOLID, I will know next week.  I have talked to friends who have it, and have told me they prefer it to their reference vinyl setups, and an additional plus is that it sounds better without a pre-amp, vs with. 1 buddy sold his DarTzeel pre-amp, when you fihure the difference between that, and the 22K NWO, it is like a wash. :duh:

The meitner is the first SS digital I have heard that approaches the sound I am looking to live with.  I cannot rate it, cause I have never had it in MY system. :nono:

Imo I have found that most stock players, which are SS, are just too analytical sounding for me, and that taking a good player, putting in top notch caps, wiring, power supply's et, is the best way to sonic bliss. :deadhorse: :stupid:

Steve,
Thanks for the clarifications.  My system overview is quite old (I guess there's no way to update it).  I liked my Modwright Sony 999ES very much, but love the Modwright Denon 3910 a lot more, especially for redbook and DVD-A (something the Sony couldn't do, of course).  I think their SACD capabilities are very close.  I love what Dan does in his modding work (and his pre's), and now that I have RSA Sason speakers, transducers that very easily bring out all the changes in my system, the source becomes even more important than it used to be.  I am working with a used modded RedWine SB3 as well, and it is certainly very nice sounding in my system but I've not a/b'd it with the redbook from the Modwright Denon cuz the Denon requires a slight bit of filter work and power supply cap changes (probably just go ahaed and get the tube rec'd one) once I get off my duff and ship to Dan.

I'm quite interested in your NWO 2.5 comments.  I have my eye on Alex's NWO DAC, due out sometime between now and spring.  He's decided to use a proprietary umbilical to get the most out of a modded APL Oppo (2 channel only), as well as an announced modded SB3.

Ted, Great system, I have wanting to hear the sason's, Robert, from ridge street is a great guy, Dan is world class too.  I betcha your system sounds fabulous, with a soundstage that does not quit.  I will let you know about the NWO, I really believe I will be done with my search, for some time to come.  BTW, are you gonna get Dan's ne 5AR4 tube PS, Tvad say's it is fabulous, and adds more than he could have imagined. :drool:I will post more later, gotta run 8)
