The Saxophone - Good recordings/Great performers.

I've always loved the Saxophone...
One of the very best on this instrument is of course John Surman.

Yesterday I picked up a CD from the store.
I put it on and was totally dumbfounded!!!
A new to me at least young artist called Frøy Aagre and her group "Offbeat"
http://www.offbeat.no/about.htm
So I got myself this CD then... It is called "Countryside"

The quality of the recording was amazing!!! And the performance!!!
Frøy Aagre has been compared with  sax legends like Jan Garbarek, David Liebman and Wayne Shorter
And I can see why!!!

A find!
Amazing clarity and enormous dynamic range on this recording!
Worldclass "blat" on the sax. The double bass was deep, resonant and woody to the extreme!!!
Mic was more on the body than on the strings. Creating a good reproduction of the lowest notes.
The Piano thus left to rule the mids in a natural way, the midnotes on the base not muffling it up.
Awesome work by the recording crew!!!
Drums just driving the rhythm, not taking front row here...

The songs had a dreamy soundscape to them.
This is a late night CD, perfect for moods of relaxation and that Glass of the finest...
Some parts of the songs have sections where the saxophone and the double bass plays the very same notes...
This creates an INSANELY deep, woody and sonorous sound with tons of wet air just quivering in the room.
This really is a superbly mic'd record!!! The placements,   the angles, you can hear it!
This is expertly done!!!

If you love the saxophone, try the World Saxophone Quartet: "Four Now".  Bluiett's baritone sax really is mindblowing.

I would add John Klemmer to the list and now I'm going to have to order it, thanks for the suggestion  :thumb:

Dick Heckstall-Smith has some wonderful sax work on Jack Bruce's Things We Like. A sleeper if there ever was one.

My favorite artist is Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

The cd's that get the most frequent listen are:

Domino
Kirk in Coppenhagen
Rip, Rig, and Panic, Etc...

From a rock perspective, I like Morphine a lot.

You can try:

Cure for Pain
Yes
