Help, will my caps get better?
« on: 1 Feb 2007, 11:55 pm »
I just changed out the caps on my VTL amp with Cardas and MultiCap RTX caps.
The sound is tight and closed in, very 2 dimensional, will this get better( I hope) with time?
I lost air and some top end as well.
I have had the amp on for two days, now I am cycling on and off every once in a while to let the caps bleed.
Just wondering if anyone has had similar growing pains or am I screwed. :duh:
Will time heal all wounds?

thanks

Multi-caps take a long time to break in, I can't comment on the Cardas caps.
Also be aware that there are reports that the multi-caps appear to become unbroken in as a function of how long they set with no charge on them.
I would not turn off the amp if the caps you replaced were in the power supply.
if the caps are in the signal path as an interstage coupling cap they will break in a lot faster if a signal is run through them.
I hope you saved your original caps or can order OEM replacements if the new caps are not to your liking.

Caps have internal resistance.
Without knowing how the circuit was conceived it's not easy to know if this could play a role.
If the caps contain Teflon, the break in is like 400 hours plus.
Higher esr (internal cap resistance) means lower resolution in the high freq's...

Depth of image is most likely determined by the low freq performance...
Are you sure you did solder everything correct?

Hey!

Mike, how are those caps sound now? :D

Yes, capacitor do need sometime to settled in. I get this feeling too when I installed new cap in my system. They seem to need more time than other components.

BTW... I don't expreince with Cardas caps but I used to have Multicap RTX in the my Audio Note M1... as output cap. Than I changed to Jensen PIO copper caps. And man! Much better. So, when I ordered my SET amp kit I ordered them with Jensen PIO copper caps.

Oh! yeah... even though they are non-polar but they are best connected in the right way.... some cap like Jensen have a line on one side as an indicator.

Anyway, good luck and keep us posted on this.

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:
