Sub kit SW-12A & PR-12A – Wow I’m shocked
« on: 1 Feb 2007, 02:53 am »
Just received a big box from Danny.  Open the box, wow, I almost fainted.  This SW-12A is a monster and it is sooooo good looking, quality built, even no solder binding posts on it, wow, man, I didn’t expect this at all.

So I have to build my enclosure.  Let’s say now that I’ve seen it my expectations are very high.

I have a question for the master or one of his followers!  What would you guys think would be the impact on sound if I was to build the enclosure with the sub and pr both on the same face of the box, one beside the other instead of each on opposite faces like Danny suggests?  I would keep the same volume of box.  If you guys tell me it’s going to impact sound quality then I wont do it that way.

Thanks.  And those of you not sure about the SW-12A, believe me, this is really a cool looking piece of equipment.

Actually, the PR and Driver on the same face has been done a lot and should work fine.

Aestheticly, your box will look nicer as it will be taller (Asuming a over/under shotgun- like configuration)
I've always found the driver/PR on different sides to be aestheticly unpleasing.

As for sound, the PR is reacting to pressurization of the box more than any directed force, so I don't think it will affect it in any way no matter where you place it (even on the top).

For alternatives, you may consider placing the PR or driver in a down-firing orientation, but I am not sure how that will affect things (DF requires certain specifications that I do not understand).

On any of the sides is fine, but top and bottom won't work due to the weight attached to the PR. Down/upfiring the driver should be fine.

Bingo...  Driver can be any direction but the PR must be mounted on one of the 4 sides.

I can't answer your question, but I know you'll be pleased once you finish it.  I recently finished my SW12 kit, and was really amazed by how much power is packed into such a small box.  When I first plugged it in, my wife thought we were having an earthquake.

Well if I do that my wife will kick me out! :icon_lol:  I'm adding the sub basically for music in order to reproduce everything musically and at low volume.  My A/V-3 are very good but I feel I'll get this nice added touch to the sound with the SW-12...

Hey hey, another surprise in the mail today!  Open the box, a sub amp!  Got myself the Rythmic Audio A370 Special Edition.  Should be a nice amp for this ultra nice driver!

You're going to love it.  I am using the Rythmik Kit Option #1 and the amp has yet to get warm - very powerful.  We need to figure out a way to do a comparison between the Passive Radiator and the Servo Options with this amp.

I just bought the GR sub that Jason (gitarretyp) was selling and I'm expecting a Rythmik Audio A370-SE to be delivered tomorrow!  I'll be mating it up with A/V-3 (older ported version) fronts, A/V-2 center, and A/V-1 surrounds.  The GR Research takeover is complete (until I have the $ to build some OB-5's...)!  :thumb:

I would be interested in anyone's thoughts on a starting point for the amp's bass extension (frequency and damping) settings as well as an ideal crossover point (I'm guessing between 50Hz and 60Hz).  I imagine it is all rather room dependent so I'm sure I'll end up trying many variations.

With your A/V-3's you might find yourself setting the crossover between 40 and 50Hz for the best blend. I'd start at 40Hz and work your way up.

Will do, thanks!
