static discharge
« on: 31 Jan 2007, 04:00 am »
I am having problems with static discharge causing pops and interruption of digital sources. Also very noticible when the ceiling fans or flourescent lights turned on/off.
I have a bryston sp2 preamp, with a 3B and 6B and PMC OB1 system. A BP26MC is temporarily hooked up thru the BYPASS option of the SP2 and is acting as a phono stage.

Any Suggestions?

Humidifier might help.

skammila, I'm having the same issue and although I haven't tried the humidifier the thing which fully helped was switching to an optical connection via toslink. But that sound was somehow muddy in comparison so I went back to a wire at the expense of the pops.
But maybe you can get some glass toslink, I heard they are good as the metal ones, mine is very bad all bent, with plastic fibers.

edit: I'm saying for the transport-dac connection, your problem might be unrelated.

The humidifier should certainly decrease the amount of static. But what about the with the pops heard from light switches etc. I forgot to mention that I have panamax ac regenerator and a line conditioner. Is the SP2 somehow more prone or do I have a ground fault issue at the home?
I will try to isolate the Request music server or use the optical as was suggested.

Thanks so far.

It's more like latter, definitely not SP2 alone. Maybe even impedance mismatch with other gear which makes it prone to interference pickup, but that is just a guess from what I usually read.
I'm having the 4BSST power amplifier with other brands on the source which were the problem so this issue was not even related to Bryston in my case, posted here just to help you since it bothered me as well for many months.

Thanks nuhi.

Will look into impedence mismatch a little further. We have unplugged all of the  sources (Audiorequest music server, Revolver via the BP26, Pioneer DVD, and the Motorola cable box) and still get the pops when the ceiling fan switches  on/off or with static discharge. I am pretty sure we diconnected the sub as well.  The SP2 is connected to the 6B and 3B with balanced cables.
Oh well, will keep trying. Oh so close to audio nirvana.....
