Bridged 5B-ST... 475W... too powerful?
« on: 26 Jan 2007, 02:33 am »
Hi

I have a 5B-ST (3 x 120Wpc) amp.  It allows easy bridging of two of the channels.

The factory spec sheet rates my bridged 5BST @ 475Win 8ohms!

I currently use two of the 5BST channels to passively bi-amp a Paradigm Studio Reference center channel.

I am toying with the idea of using the amp bridged with the centre channel.  Paradigm rates its centre channel as an 8 ohm speaker with a "maximum input power of 130W with typical program source, provided the amplifier clips no more than 10% of the time".

Is it safe to even try the bridged mode?  Should I expect a sonic benefit?

Thanks
Alex

As long as you don't clip the amp, you'll likely be OK. Not sure why you need apprx 500W for a center though.  Doubt you'll hear any benefits from a bridged amp though.

I use a 5BST bridged to my Paradigmn Studio Reference center channel. I use the remaining channel for my 6th back channel speaker.

Works great.

Hi Bruce

Good to hear that the combo works well and hasn't damaged your speaker.

Did you have to compensate for any gain differences for the bridged centre channel?  My understanding is that there would be level differences unique to the bridged channel.

Thanks

I noticed no difference, but the speaker level setup adjustment trims would take care of any small differences..
