Free high-res Orchestral music downloads available
« on: 25 Jan 2007, 07:44 pm »
This is a first for the internet.  24-bit/96kHz remastered tape files available for downloading.  This music is a MUST download.  Some of these tracks are famous performances that are highly sought after.  If you have an Off-Ramp Turbo or Turbo2, Off-Ramp I2S or a Transporter, you can play these native 24-bit/96kHz files.  They are encoded in FLAC.

The first samples (exerpts) being offered for download are FREE at this URL:

Enjoy!

Excellent link.  One can also buy the CD if you liked the free sampler.

I thought all of the CDs were 16 bit/44.1 kHz?

They seem to offer both CD 16/44 and DVD 24/96 versions of everything.  I'm tempted to pick up a CD or two, it seems that they did a very good job with the remaster.

They are.  This is mastered from tape.

Thanks Steve and jon.  I understood that the material was originally coming from tape, but had assumed that the only hi-res medium was a FLAC download because I didn't see the DVD option at first.  (I had initially looked only at the sampler disk, which is only available on CD instead of both CD and 24/96 DVD.)

Thanks for the link, Steve!

Thanks, Steve, the 24/96 tracks sound positively "LIVE."  Unfortunately, they are making my 16/44.1 Flac files sound tame by comparison, so I need to buy more.

If I buy their DVD version, will EAC rip it into Flac off the DVD to play on Foobar?

EAC won't rip DVDs. But there are some software tools that will.

Just getting into this area, so I'm a novice.  But this software was highly recommended over EAC.  All the formats are listed, plus its capabilities.  See if it can rip DVD, and please post your opinion.

I have not tried this myself.  There are tools that can extract from DVD tracks.  Try:

Unfortunately none of these tools will rip the DVD to any usable audio format.
Try DVD Audio Extractor (http://www.castudio.org/dvdaudioextractor/). This one will extract audio streams from your DVDs and save them as OGG, MP3, Wave or FLAC files.
DVD Audio Ripper (http://www.xilisoft.com/dvd-audio-ripper.html) is another tool that will rip DVD to MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC, AC3, OGG, RA formats.

I don't think they can be better than EAC (worse case scenario the same). EAC is not really user friendly (so you have to do some manual adjustments) but it is free. And free is a great advantage.

Some people at this forum: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org write programs that can "complement" EAC in managing, processing and converting the files it rips. But it takes a little bit of time tweaking around your computer to achieve this.

I think the Poikosoft was recommended (by an industry professional) because it *is* easier to use than EAC. I haven't tried it as yet, so I cannot comment directly. "Free is a great advantage", true....but $29.95 is small pittance to pay for a more user-friendly program, and it includes lifetime updates. I'm interested in using this type of software in as straight a line as possible....I don't wish to "tweak around" my computer to try and solve problems or imperfections. Time is money, 'ya know.

I have used their CD-DA and it is a pretty good ripping tool while the trial version lasted. Now if you think their price is right you should at least take a look at the following discussion:

Firstly, thank you for the link.  I read the whole thread twice.  My view? It is possible that Mr. Casanova misunderstood the terms of agreement, and made a mountain out of a molehill. For goodness sakes, we're talking a few dollars more (in his case) to take advantage of software that just might make his life easier, and the music sound better. It is also possible that his gripe has some substance, and that Mr. Poiko didn't follow through as well as he should have....however, it seems that he is trying to explain his protocol and reasoning for the pricing issue, but Mr. Casanova feels slighted.

I have found countless individuals in business over the decades without appropriate skills and acumen on many levels. Not only is there a language barrier to overcome (in dealing with overseas businesses), but business practices in many countries are not universal in nature. I am glad I read the thread, but I think it is more important that the software does what it advertises, and in that regard, it's a bargain for what it seems to do. $34.95? To properly and expertly rip and archive thousands of CD's into whatever format I choose? I wish everything were that inexpensive.

I wish everything were that inexpensive.

Ain't it the truth.

I can't use Easy CD-DA Extractor since moving to an OS/X-based system, and I miss it.  It's a whole lot better than "pretty good", Lightfire, and I've ripped w/ EAC in every manner I could find on the web, including those found on hydrogenaudio.com.  Every bit-for-bit comparison I ran was identical to those produced using EAC, and Easy CD-DA Extractor was and is WAAAAAAY more intuitive to use than EAC, not to mention 2-3 times faster.

Don't believe the hype, Alan.  There are those who say if you aren't using EAC, your copies are inferior.  To that I say hogwash.  I'd pay triple the asking price for a Mac version.

Double....the fellow that recommended Poikosoft uses a Macbook for all his ripping. Why can't you use it with OS/X?

From Poikosoft's "Download" page:
Quote
Supported operating systems: Windows 2000, Windows XP (x86 and x64), Windows 2003, and Windows Vista (x86 and x64)
You'll notice there is no mention of OS/X, or any other Mac OS for that matter.

Maybe the gentleman has a Microsoft OS loaded on his Macbook.  That's an option, but one I will not avail myself of since my 20+ years of experience w/ Microsoft and their products is the reason I bought a Mac.

FWIW, I have a BS in Computer Science, and my wife is a (Microsoft-based) Systems Administrator at the military base from which I retired.  IOW, the move was not because I/we were unable to use the OS or associated programs effectively.

If Poikosoft's website is error and your acquaintance has found a way to use the program w/ a Mac OS, I would appreciate knowing about it.
