Question about speaker cabinets, building an SSR
« on: 25 Jan 2007, 12:57 pm »
Hello folks,

I have an SSR kit coming here pretty soon and have bugged Rick with a few questions, by phone and mail receiving the great customer service I see he is known for. Anyway thought I would ask my next ones in the forum so other builders may learn something.

For speaker boxes in general and SSR in particular:

1. Would a 45 degree angle around the front face be as effective as a round over cut? Some manufacturers, Coincident Tech for example use this method.

2. Is there a minimum radius that is recommended?

3. Does it affect things much to round over the front sides but leave the top and bottom at a right angle? I'm not doing this but see it used fairly often, had a North Creek speaker kit with boxes (from Lee Taylor) made this way for example.

Thanks again Rick,
Larry R

Hi Larry, I asked Rick these questions (and 25 million others ) when I was building my SSR's.
His answers were:
1) Yes
2) 1/4" to 3/4" is fine
3) That's fine and indeed what Rick sometimes does himself.

HTH!

Thanks DSK,
That gives a lot of latitude on final touches. I'm agonizing over using some killer birds eye maple veneer I have vs a solid birds eye front. Can't seem to track down a satisfactory piece of the bird's eye maple in solid lumber.
