7B SST current draw
« on: 24 Jan 2007, 09:50 am »
I have had great pleasure from my 7B SSTs over the past two years.

I have posted here the fact that on turn on they make a buzzing sound - and the replies have always been "no problems".

However, last week I put a power conditioner into my equipment, and although it is rated at 1500 watts - it will not allow my Brystons to turn on - it just keeps switching off.

Can anyone tell me what the current draw at turn on should be??

Surely not more than 1500 watts???

Regards
CBW

Hi CBW,

Toroidal transformers draw large amounts of current on turn-on. In the case of the 7B SST at 240 volts the turn on surge (with our SOFTSTART circuit) is about 35 amps each.

My guess is that the circuit breaker in your power conditioner will not accept the short term current draw of 70 Amps (2 times 35 amps) where the circuit breakers in your home had no problem with it. The Torus power conditioners have circuit breakers designed to accept these short term draws without activating.

PS- this inability to deliver short term high current was why we did not recommend using powerline conditioners with Bryston amps until we developed the TORUS units. Musical transients also require the delivery of short term very high current peaks from the amplifier.

Hi James,

I bought the PS audio Premier Power Plant

Hope this helps.

Hi CBW,

I had a look at the PS. The input breaker maybe 6A.

On turn-on the two amps may demand 16,800W (240V x 35A x 2 - more than 10X the Power conditioner's rating). While this is a very short term condition (generally less than 1/2 cycle, 0.01 seconds @ 50 Hz), it may be long enough to trip the power conditioner's breaker. The more distant panel breaker would be slower to trip because of the line impedance.

A Torus International 8A Power Isolation Unit is rated at 1920VA, but its Load Current Capability is much greater, it can supply 500A for 1/2 cycle (120,000W), 250A for 1 second and 125A for 10 seconds. Beyond that, it will make the amplifiers sound better than ever. The low impedance output coupled with a huge magnetic flux-field supplies amplifiers all of the juice they want without sagging the voltage the way that plugging into the wall will. Most power conditioners limit power, their benefits of filtering or regulation are lost on large amplifiers. This is not the case with Torus PIUs which provide huge current as well as the best noise and surge suppression available.

The PS is a power regenerator and the surge suppression is MOV-based so I would not recommend it for use with our power amplifiers.

Hi James,

Thanks for your explanation, I have now plugged my Brystons back into the wall socket, and amy saving up my pennies to get one of your Torus units.

Hi James,

I hope you will suggest a set of Torus Power units (120V) to handle my system.

Digital sources: Arcam FMJ 23T CD player (will be replaced with a Bryston when available), Denon DVD-3910.

Preamp: BP26

Amps: (2) 7B SST

Video: Sony 32" CRT (will probably be replaced with a ~40" plasma)

Subwoofer: M&K 5310 dual 12" 600W peak class AB amp

Bass Management Controller: M&K LFE-4 (will probably add a Velodyne SMS-1 this year)

In a previous post you had said that digital components should optimally use a separate Torus unit. Would video use the same unit?

Any general comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

HI Bob,

The 15 or 20 amp unit would be ideal for all the equipment or it your wanted total isolation a small 5 amp unit for the digital and video gear.

Hi Levi,

Sorry nothing direct -  the Torus is only sold through Torus or Bryston dealers.
