can i connect a sub to my p-8?  as experiment, i only have small speakers so it may be a good test for my room to see if floor standers would be a better option in the future..

Yes you could, but you need to somehow be able to set the crossover point:

Option 1)  Running the smaller speaker full range,  2)  Run the smaller speaker in high-pass mode.
