I am sure Brian and John etc are knocking them dead at CES...can't wait to hear about the new speaker etc. In the meantime, I thought you might find this interesting.  There is a company called Zenph Studios. They have developed a way to take old sound recordings of solo pianos and turn them into actual high-res midi files, playable on a Disklavier Pro Piano.  They have a recording contract with Sony BMG to record many of the great pianists of the last century, classical and jazz etc. with this new technology.  Here is their website.

http://zenph.com/

This is ground-breaking stuff. What they have accomplished here is nothing short of amazing...like Brian's new speaker!   :D :D  Who would have thought that you can take an old 78 scratchy recording and transform it into an exact performance, just from the SOUND of the recording, then playable on a modern solenoid piano??!  :o :o Take a listen on their website of the before and after sample of Alfred Cortort...incredible. http://zenph.com/listen.html  In any case, below is a copy of an email sent to the Disklavier Forum, and I thought you would find it interesting...I can't wait for the release...just think, playing that SACD/CD through Brian's new speakers!!!  NIRVANAAAAA!!!

Thanks for your kind words. I’ll give a somewhat lengthy reply, because the process has been so interesting.

On Glenn Gould’s birthday, September 25th, we performed the entire 1955 Goldberg Variations before a live audience; this was broadcast on CBC Radio Two. Later that evening, we made the studio recording with Sony’s finest classical team: producer Steve Epstein and engineer Richard King (between them, they’ve won 27 Grammys). Supervising the Glenn Gould Studio was Peter Cook (who was also Richard’s teacher). The recording session took 14 hours, for 38 minutes of music. The performer never tired (!), but the Disklavier Pro was re-tuned, re-voiced, and re-calibrated multiple times. Steve and Richard are among our biggest advocates now; they were amazed by the extraordinarily precise quality of the results (all praise the inventors of the Pro), and can’t believe they’ve had the chance to make a new recording of Glenn Gould.

We should see the cover art for the album this week. Biographer Kevin Bazzana (author of the Gould biography “Wondrous Strange”) wrote the liner notes. The album has a lot of “firsts,” and there’s been a lot for the Sony production team to absorb. For example, there will be 5 separate recordings on the same high-resolution disc (a hybrid multichannel SACD). Two are CD versions that will play perfectly on any CD player – the two recordings are made from two different perspectives. One of those versions was specially recorded for headphone listening – the plans are in place to have it available as an iTunes download the day the disc is released. We heard the HD surround-sound version played back on great equipment in Sony’s NY mastering studio; it is, quite simply the most immersive piano recording we’ve ever heard.

The production run of SACD pressings should be complete next month, and we’ll begin interviews with the reviewers who have the longest magazine lead times. Oddly, we’ve learned there’s a bit of training to be done on how to listen to it. This is the first time in history where there’s been an “absolute reference” to match: the very well-known original recording. Every note and every nuance had to be perfectly re-created in our process. We matched the timbre and dynamic range of the original piano playing carefully, knowing that the recording technology of the time compressed the original’s reproduced dynamic range somewhat. So, a modern recording, with modern mics in different positions, shows the performance in a different light. It really does sound like a real piano in the room with you, but you’re seated in a different position from the original. You hear much more detail with the wide modern dynamic range, and the polyphonic lines seem to stand out more. A fascinating experience; same performance, different seat.

Again, I want to assure everyone this disc plays great on every CD player. The HD surround version (on the same disc) is so compelling, though, it may be a reason to upgrade your system (BTW, every new PlayStation 3 console plays multichannel SACDs).

The disc will be released at different dates in different countries, depending on translations, printing, and promotional material. It will be out as soon as it’s ready; it’s not being held up to coincide with any other dates. It looks now like the US/Canada release will be late April (just weeks away).

BTW, we’re finishing the coding of Art Tatum’s “Piano Starts Here” album. The team has fixed many problems encountered in the current CD re-issue, including the fact that the tape was remastered 34 cents flat (about a quarter step) – so he actually plays a little faster even than what you’re used to. We got a copy of the original live recording, so we can return some Gershwin material that was edited out over time. It’s such a thrill to hear Tatum’s playing.

Hi John,

Just got in a short time ago and have so much to do.

The Show was the best ever.  We were packed almost every second.

I can count the times when there were no guests in the room, for over a minute or two, over 4 days, on one hand :o

I hope all go a good listen because B, has really out done himself this time.

I think in the back of our minds, we all have a "SOUND" we think the best speakers should produce, to make us happy.

The RM v60, with subs "HAS" that sound.

Usually by the last day, the sound is getting pretty good.

This year, it was almost from day ONE. :green:

I am now rethinking my room to try and fit these in.

WOW, what a show, what a great time, meeting everyone and getting to play their Ref cuts, What a system, and WHAT a SPEAKER!!!!

I am not even going to try and describe it, I think others will do that, but I will say the those who have "pre-ordered" are in for the treat of their Audiophile Lives aa

Oh Yeah

I heard the RM V60s several times over the last few days.  The V60s are amazing speakers.  I got to play a number of my classical and pop CDs on them.  The CDs all sounded great.  I dropped by one last time just before they started to break down the system for packing.  I played my Rammstein CD:  Mutter:  Ich Will.  At high volume it was stunning.  Even Brian's wife thought it was great, and she normally does not like my LOUD music.

Everyone that I talked to at CES who had heard the V60s thought they were outstanding.

Kudos to Brian for another mega success.

Those are some of the coolest looking speakers ever.  Plus, open baffle speakers have always intringued me. The tweeter tooks kick butt, too.  I do think the amps don't have enough tubes, though. ;-)

I can imagine!  When I lived in AZ, there's no way I'd ever consider owning tubes, as they get so darn hot.  In CT, they're pleasantly warm.

Congratulations on the Show. I hope lots of buzz and business flows from it. I'll have to find a way to hear a pair of RM60s.

Hi Jonbee,

I think B, is going to have to issue a "WARNING" label with these, since they are both "addictive" to your Audiophile AudioNeural Centers, and "hazardous" to your wallet

So please have your affairs in order, and your credit limits increased, prior to seeking out this audition. aa

Funny thing a couple Audiophiles from Israel came in 3 times.  The first time they ask the price and I said "89" a pair.  And they said they thought that wasn't too bad since they had just heard a pair for "70" that were not nearly as good

I then realized they thought I meant $89,000

When I told them "89 hundred", they couldn't beleive it.

Exciting, is there going to be a trade up program, I remember a mention in an earlier blog.  It's funny once in this VMPS club you really get hooked!

John,

You gotta arrange a SoCal demo on these ASAP.

In the picture why does one speaker have the waveguide and the other doesn't?  Was that done for acoustic reasons or just to show what they look like with and without?

Hi Mike,

Yes B, has a "loose" trade up program, but it is very similar to trading in your "used car".  It is always better to sell the old ones.

But some don't like to deal with "tire kickers" and low ballers, so it is available only on the RM30 and RM40s (unless your dealer wants whatever else you have) aa

Hi Russ,

Would certainly be fun, but shipping is a BEAR!!

If I can find a way to get a pair, I'll have people over.

Maybe we can get the Audio Society to get a pair and let members use them for 30 days.      at a pop.  :thumb:

The V60's have a LOT of dispersion, forward and rear.  It got a little too much for the small room and I restricted the front directivity by removing the waveguide on the left channel speaker.  I compansated for the difference in treble output with the Lpads.  This turned out to give the best tonal balance and imaging, although it lead to dozens of people asking why the speakers were set up asymmetrically.

In future I will encourage owners to experiment with CDWG on or off depending on room or positioning.
