LG VX8500 ‘Chocolate’ music phone?

Anyone have one of these phones? How does it sound?

I know Apple is coming out with a cel phone but I can almost guarantee that it WONT be for Verizon, at least not for some time and there is no way I’m switching from Verizon to another carrier – it’s not happening.

I have a Motorolla now that plays 3G video and MP3’s but the output is very low and the quality sucks (limited to something like 64kbps), the Moto Razor is the same way.

This LG VX8500 has an optional adapter that includes a mic and a standard stereo headphone output so you can use whatever headphones you want. It also supports Stereo Bluetooth devices. It has 64MB of internal memory and a microSD card slot that supports up to 2GB of memory. You can put WMA or MP3’s on the card directly or sync it with the supplied USB cable from Windows Media Player. Its got a built in EQ with preset and custom settings.

How does it sound? I’d like to use it in my car as a phone AND a music player. I use a cassette adapter on my Alpine stereo which sounds decent enough for my commute each day.

I bought my wife the 'Krazor' after looking at the Chocolate.  I found the Choco to be too hard to use... the controls were too fiddly.  If you have tiny sharp fingers, the Choco might be perfect, though.

The Krazor sounds great, no limits on the mp3's... easy to use, good phone.  Battery life isn't great, though.

Sounds great how? What headphones are you using with it? What adapter?

I searched the web for anything related to audio and Motorola hardly acknowledges it plays music, or its output voltage, quality and so on… No specs, says only MP3 adn AAC. The Chocolate is marketed as an MP3 player/Phone and there are lots of audio related accessories. It has mini-SD up to 4GB.

The MotoQ is also said to be a very good multimedia player and Motorola sells accessories for it (stereo headsets , output adapters), it also has the highest output and actually has Windows Media Player (plays WAV’s) and supports mini-SD cards up to 4GB.

I’m more interested in the phones ability to be an MP3 player and take LARGE 2+ GB mini-SD cards.

Thanks for the reply.

It sounds great (for a cell phone) playing on various headphones and my office system... I honestly haven't even thought about critically listening to such a device.  I put a 1G card into it... not sure if it can handle 2... I don't think it plays .flac files... but I'm not sure.  There are no technical specs in the manual stating output voltages, memory card sizes, or anything like that.... just how to use it.

I'm a phone-first kind of guy but the KRZR seems to functionally do music and phone equally well in my opinion.  The sound quality is as good as most portable mp3 devices I've heard.  I'm not an expert, haven't done any real tests, etc....

Thanks Carlman, I really appreciate the responses. I’m not being audio critical, just want to know if the output is decent enough quality to listen to music. I have an iPod but it would be useful to have a phone to play music from since I use it in my car all the time for about two to three hours a day.

I perfet to own the Razon (Motorola) over the LG, I agree, the Moto is easier to use and fits in a mans hands better then the Chocolate from LG.

Do you use an adapter for 3.5mm (micro) output like this one

No idea how it sounds, but I just shopped for Verizon phones.  The saleslady told me she has a Chocolate and thinks it's a piece of crap.  She didn't like anything about it, referring mostly or entirely to its functioning as a phone.  She also said they are "very highly returned".

Yes, to both.. you need the adaptor and it does Bluetooth (well, I might add)... The phone I bought my wife (and am recommending) is the Krazor, (aka MOTOKRZR) not the Razor... It's a little slimmer than the Razor.  I have the regular Razor and haven't even tried to listen to music on it... I have used the GPS feature, though.. pretty neat.

BTW, I've heard similar things as Mike mentioned about the Chocolate.. glad I passed on it.

Rumor is the IPOD phone will get announced at the next Apple gathering (forget when...a month or so away), and should be out very soon after that.  I don't know how they'll handle carriers, but I could imagine them just selling the thing at Apple stores in addition to whatever network they team up with.
