What's with Morel? / MW-164
« on: 8 Jul 2003, 01:35 pm »
What's the difference between Morel Acoustics USA and Morel in Israel?  Each website has a notice claiming they are the real Morel and 'another' company is ripping them off (or something similar)  Perhaps they are the same?  Or are they at war?  Morel doesn't answer my email.

Finally, the Morel MW-164 seems, on paper, to be answer to big bass in a small driver.   In fact, spec wise it seems to blow everything else I've seen completely away.  Am I missing something?

Anyone have first hand experience with it?   It seems to be perfect for my DIY application but I'd like some input.  The other contender is Peerless HDS-182.

Thanks!

This might help:

There's no such thing as big bass from a small driver. Physics gets in the way... ;-)

Having said that, this driver looks like it would work nicely in a 25l *sealed* box, if you don't mind the sensitivity being a little low... I guess that answers your other question about front/rear porting :-)

This driver is used in Duntech's Germstone series and I like it.

Great link!  Thanks a million.  Hmmmm.... more decisions loom.

Do I go full range Fostex FX200 or Peerless HDS182 or Morel MW-164??

If price is no concern for this group, anyone see a preference for my 25litre pot?

Dunno, maybe there are some plants who want to live in them

J/K. I suspect that your decision may come down to how much you want to invest in learning about crossovers. I think full range drivers are great starter projects (amongst other things) as you can learn about building and box tuning without worrying (much) about crossover design. The sound is not something everybody loves tho. Otherwise, drivers with a flat passband and smooth rolloff will be easier to work with for a beginner. I try to choose drivers like this for myself  8)  To that end the Peerless CSX might be a better choice than the HDS, for instance. BTW the Audax carbon fibers look good too (on paper anyway).

Well that's the beauty of designing with ceramic garden pots!!  If the sound sucks, you can always harvest tomatoes.  How many of you woodie box DIY'ers can do that (without rot)?   (On the other hand, you could make some damn fine pet coffins). ('')

On the other hand, extremely low resonance, and an inverted horn design might just make a trip to the garden center worthwhile.  I paid less than $40 for the pair of 25 litre pots.  I'm always looking for better ones, which more closely resemble the nOrh drums or the B&W nautilus.

The prototype is finished using Onkyo D-202A (well-reviewed in it's day) drivers/crossover and I would say the sound has improved immensely.  Not just more efficient (louder) but with much more detail, though still lacking in lows (not surprisingly as I have yet to properly tune the box).  Maybe I just got lucky.  [/img]
