Kharma Ceramique 3.1C Loudspeakers
« on: 3 Jan 2007, 12:32 am »
The Ceramique 3.1C is Kharma's lowest end loudspeaker and is priced at $12,200 a pair. I bargain compared the the other models offered by Kharma. Has anyone heard these speakers?

Not sure I would call a non-full range speaker that costs over $14k with the necessary stands a bargain...

I don't believe they had these at RMAF, but I did listen to the next model up the line and while it had a nice open sounding midrange, there was no bass to speak off and the soundstage was very small.  I would expect the 3.1C to not be any better in that department than its bigger brother.  I know that Kharma claims that the speaker goes into the 30's, but it certainly didn't sound that way.

Bargain and Kharma aren't two words that go together, but the 3.1C are less expensive than what I'd expect from Kharma.

Here is a report from the 2006 Montreal Show from Audio Federation:

"The new Kharma* Ceramique CE 3.1c speakers are the baby brothers of Kharma's world famous Ceramique 3.2 speakers. They appear to be only slightly smaller, but come it at just a little over half the price. How do they compare? Are they an acceptable substitute for those that cannot lay out the $22K or so for the 3.2 speakers?

We also heard this exact same system, or something very, very close to it, at CES 2006, and in a similarly sized room, but with the Kharma Mini Exquisites - their top of the line 2-way speakers. So we have some slight familiarity with how the other components in this system sound.

The little 3.1 sounds  a lot like its bigger brother, the 3.2. Same great sound-staging, imaging and dynamics. Same tonal purity, although perhaps a little leaner - I often wanted a tube in the system somewhere to flesh out the harmonics and bloom a little (let's see, I also thought this would help in the Brinkmann room, the Sonus Faber room, ...no I am not going tube happy, I promise :-).

The 3.1 also seemed more.... personal... and intimate.

This intimacy provides a greater sense of presence and... touchability. Not so much solidity as palpability. Hard to describe, it is like the music is speaking to me, and only to me, personally. This is opposed to the more common (well  not that common, but what the best larger speakers offer) 'you are there' effect where the listener is a member of the audience and must make contact with the musicians in the metaverse somewhere, as opposed to right here.

Told you it was hard to describe.

Overall, this was one of the best sounding rooms at the show.

At least, that is how it sounded to these ears."

Marcus....Kharma does make some nice speakers....but their way over priced compared to whats out there. I've heard them at RMAF...2x's....and the NYC Stereophile shows....3x's.

I'm too poor for $12k speakers that aren't full range! :o  No sense in cultivating such champagne tastes with my beer budget.

I've heard the Ceramique 2.2's, and while I might agree that they did not have great bass extension, I have to disagree regarding George's comment about the soundstaging.   In the setup I heard them in (multiple times, with different electronics on occassion), they have consistently had among the best soundstaging (width, but particularly the depth) I've heard.  Maybe the room setup had something to do with it (a very long room, with plenty of space behind the speakers as well as behind the listening position)...but I have heard other speakers in that setup that did not present as big and deep a soundstage...

Phil,

It could have been the setup, but I honestly can't remember how close the speakers were to the walls.  I do remember that it was one of the normal sized rooms (aka fairly small) and they were using the Kharma class d amps.

The bigger models have stunning midrange and soundstage qualities, but to me, are still lacking in true weight and bass authority.  That lack of a really soild foundation, takes something away from the overall presentation.  To me they sound look an excellent monitor with a little better bass.  Not what I would exepct for the price...
