RM30M - 2005 version - Help needed
« on: 17 Dec 2006, 09:09 am »
Hi to all of you,

I am Ricardo Pinto, I live in Portugal and I guess I am the only guy with VMPS speakers in my country. I bought my speakers via Dubravko a year ago and I am very happy with them.

I have a couple of questions though and I need some tips and help to try and take the best out of my RM30Ms:

- I have an McIntosh MC275 MKIV power amp with taps for 4, 8 and 16 Ohms. Can I use 8 ohm tap for bass and 4 ohm for mid-high? Other suggestions? I am buiding my speaker cables and I have different wires for medium/high and bass binding posts.

- As my speakers are pre-CDWG, is there a way of upgrading them or try a DYI grill to take benefit of the Constant Directivity Wave Guide? Or the benefits don't justify the investment?

- Any other tweak/upgrade I can make, given the fact that I am 1800 miles away from Dubravko and on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean (even further away) from VMPS "labs"?

Now that I have ready my new listening room, I am going to start showing what VMPS speakers can do to my audiophile friends that already read and heard about VMPS but never had the chance of actually hearing them. I am planning to buy a second MC275 so I can use each as a mono unit and give more "juice" to the RM30s .

Thank you all for your hints and tips and thanks Dubravko for this year of joy that was living with my VMPS (although with lousy conditions  due to my new home only now is finished).

Regards from Portugal,
Ricardo.

Hi Ricardo,

You can get the CDWG.  You get the CDWG, new passive radiators, and a kit to "dehorn" your tweeter.  I ordered this for my center channel, but have not yet done this, so I cannot tell you of the differences.  However, perhaps other people can.

As for your macintosh question, I would think that you wouldn't be able to do that.  However, I'm not familiar with this.  It would make sense to me that you're only allowed to use one of these outputs at a time (and then just select the one that best matches your speakers).

Hello Ricardo and welcome,
it's an interesting question whether you can use different taps at the same time. Maybe you can, this reminds me of Sunfire amp with separate "current" and "voltage" taps. Anyway, with 2x MC275 you can biamp 30s or use each MC275 as a mono amp. Recently, with two amps connected I only used biamping so I really don't know if bridging is better.

As for CDWG, it certainly have its benefits. Biggest is a more natural sound field, but tonality is changed so in my experience best results with CDWG are achieved with electronic equalization. If you like tonality you have now, and have enjoyable soundfield, I'd only say - enjoy it.

Hello Dubravko,

you know my mail... now it's your task to propose CDWG upgrade  :green: (don't you remember shipping my RM30s to Portugal last year with -20ºC in January! :o).

Regards,
Ricardo.
