Firing RM 40's Straight Ahead
« on: 15 Dec 2006, 06:57 am »
I almost "feel guilty", but just for kicks, I spaced my RM 40's faily wide apart in an equilateral triangle, and fired em straight into the room.
I sit in the center, and could care less about someone unfortunate to be off center.

The effect is interesting, and they seem to have a bigger sound this way, in my room.

Tuning wise, does anyone know the ramifications of running them this way

I seem to be able to reduce my midrange level to get a warmer sound, w/o hearing the upper end of the woofer.

Firing in front of me, I am unable to reduce my midrange level much below the stock setting or I can hear the woofers upper end, I think ?

Any comments ?

Anyone know when waveguide will be availiable for old spiral RM 40's ?

You can get the waveguides now. The spiral tweeters use the same one. However you probably will need a different passive crossover if your speakers are over 2.5 years old.

Well Warner, i am having a blast with my old RM 40's.
I like em firing straight ahead, for now.

It is giving a huge sound, with incredible imaging, in my room.

My room is pretty wide, and they are minimum 4 feet from side walls.

Man, if I could get just a little more warmth ?

The sound is almost electrostatic like, maybe better, with incredible detail.

Maybe a mid woofer upgrade and crossover point  change is in order ?

The better midwoofer is a must imo. It made a huge improvement in the upper bass lower midrange. That would add the warmth you may want. Also I use a hybrid power amp on the planar/ribbon sections. That helped significantly also. It's just a very little bit but made a significant improvement.

On cones I'm not sure I'd like a hybrid or tube amp but on these speakers with their speed it's a worthy endeavor.
