"New" Squeezebox 2 DOA
« on: 10 Dec 2006, 05:57 am »
Hi
I'm new to this forum.
I recently bought a squeezebox 2 on ebay(new in box and indeed that's how it appeared when it arrived).
I had the intention of using it stock for a while and then at some stage (when funds allowed) sending it to Wayne for modification.
Went out and bought a wireless router ,500g hard drive etc.
Then.......tried to set it up today, connected the ps and nothing happened.
Display not working...remote doesn't seem to do anything.
Checked the ps and got a reading of 5.15v on my multimeter.
Opened up the case and it appears 5v is getting through to at least the first capacitor . I measured
12v across the larger electrolytic on the other side of the board.

My questions to Wayne (or anyone else who has an idea) are:

Is this a problem anyone has encountered before?
Is it perhaps possible to repair this or do I toss it and go buy a new squeezebox 3 ( bought a squeezebox 2 as I liked the idea of having the film caps on the output rather than elecrolytics).

Soooo dissapointing.......I was looking forward to having it up and running this weekend.

I have quite a good dac (audio synthesis dax) and was going to hook up the digital out for now but wanted to eventually go for a full mod and see which sounded best to me.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Les,
Are you absolutely sure that the SB2 is not working? ....I'll explain....

When I got my SB2 a year ago, I powered it up (not yet connected to the hifi system) and nothing appeared on the display. Nothing happened when I used the remote UNTIL I hit one of the buttons on the bottom row (think it was the 'Size' button). The unit would keep going into sleep mode (blank display) every 30 seconds or so until I hit this button again on the remote. Once I went through the network setup and the SB2 recognised the wireless router, all was well.

Also, I have noticed that if you power off the SB2 power supply for a minute (eg. to change interconnects) then turn it back on, nothing appears on the display even if you do hit the 'Size' button on the remote control. However, if you power off the SB2 power supply and leave it off for 10 minutes before turning it back on, it will fire up OK.

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for the reply.

Tried your suggestion but still no go.

Will leave it powered up for a while and see if it comes to life later.

Try to hold some buttons for a couple of sec's,     the power on button,    the go left button and the brightness button....  It should do something

When you look down on the top of the SB2, through the slits near the back you should see a little red glow, indicating that the unit is receiving power. Do you have this?

I had a similar problem a while ago and had to send the box back to Slimdevices. They didn't require any proof of purchase and took care of the problem quickly. If you don't get it working, give them a shot.

Do you have slimserver running on your PC?

The SB2 is a "slim device" and can't do too much without the PC being on, Slimserver running and the SB2 connected to the network. After the SB2 is first set up and all is working, you can then connect it to Slim network though the 'net and stream audio feeds without your computer being on.

The early SB2s did have a small problem with the daughter board coming loose. If you feel up to it, Take apart the clamshell case, you will need torx drivers to do this. Remove the wireless card. You will see the daughter board under the wireless card. Make sure it is seated tightly into the connector under it. Tighten the screw holding the board in place.

Put the wireless card back and put the case together. Screw the wireless antenna in place.

Plug the DC power cable in. If the display comes up with Squeeze box, press the add button on the remote. This will reset everything back to factory defaults. Then you can go ahead and set up the SB to your system.

If you are still having trouble you are welcome to send the unit to me.

Hi Wayne.
Thanks for your earlier reply.
In the meantime, I've been in touch with Slim Devices who will charge $90 for repair plus whatever it cost to ship it there and back from here in Sydney(Australia).
Now if you think you can get it going I'm thinking perhaps I'd be better off shipping it straight to you for modification as well.
What are your thoughts?

IT'S ALIVE!
Wayne you are an absolute legend.....thankyou so much!
Tried your suggestion one more time......opened up the case and this time completely removed and replaced the daughter board, plugged it in and I couldn't believe it.......the greeting logo in beautiful blue.
Will now build a diy 5v power supply.
The Ultimate is a bit beyond my means at present but I will be in touch early in the new year to arrange getting the unit off to you for modifications.
Can you fit a 75ohm bnc instead of the WBT RCA for the digital out?
Thanks again (To you and all the others who replied)
Les

Les,

Glad to have helped. You may want to glue/epoxy the connector from the daughter board to the connector from the main board together. That was Slim Devices fix for this problem.

The 75 ohm BNCs I have used by Canare are not really possible to use with the SB2. They have a rear mounted nut. There is no way to tighten the connector with the clamshell case. I do prefer the sound and quality of a WBT NextGen male and female RCA over that of the BNC. I do not plan to offer BNC connectors for SB mods.
