Is there a way to rip copy protected movies to a hard drive to be stored and viewed directly from the drive.

Try these, they work very well.
Freeware-   http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm

Free Demo- http://www.dvdfab.com/download.htm  (the gold version works well, don't know about the platinum)

Yes absolutely. From an HTPC harddrive, you can store and playback ripped DVD disks just as easily as you can store and playback ripped CD disks. You will of course need playback software and either a software decoder or hardware decoder. My favorite decoding solution is the Sigma Designs X-Card.

I prefer to rip the DVD's into "iso" format. The best software I know of (now that DVDDecrypter is dead :( ) is called CloneDVD2, from the Elaborate Bytes company. It is used along with another little program called AnyDVD (from Slysoft company, a partner of Elaborate Bytes). This latter program is actually a new software driver for your DVD drive, that allows you to pretty much do whatever you want with the original DVD image, with no restrictions.

To load and play the iso image from harddrive, the free program DAEMON Tools works perfectly - it creates a virtual DVD drive that loads/unloads your virtual DVD disk (or virtual CD, etc) on command, and even lets you change the region codes of the virtual drive.

Have fun!

Another great program is DVDshrink (version 3.2 is latest).  AnyDVD resides on the computer in the background, removing all encryption, and DVDshrink copies the DVD. The nice thing about 'shrink is that it allows you to remove all the superfluous garbage from the original (leaving only the movie; no trailers, warnings, menus, etc.)and it also compresses the movie to fit on a single-sided DVD if you want. It's free and I highly recommend it. This is as easy as it gets.

Hi

If you are going to rip to an ISO file and mount in a virtual drive,BEWARE later Daemon tools has AD-WARE caution when installing this program. Daemon Tools although offers a virtual drive it really is for game emulation,I prefer Virtual Clone drive for plain image mounting
http://www.elby.ch/fun/software/index.html

For an older version of Daemon tools without AD-WARE still great for mounting images.

DVD Decrypter is available here http://rarewares.org/others.html but since it is no longer developed it may well have issues with some later disc protection.(not noticed that myself)

Good point about the adware...as little programs become popular they tend to get adware attached to them!

Also transcoding video can be processor and space intensive, and you may want to have a dedicated box just for this kind of thing. It may be a couple hours for a video and then you have to burn it also. That is if you are not going to keep it on that PC.

It was sad to see DVD Decrypter go.  It really worked well.  But the political power of the RIAA & the movie studios is such that they rammed thru legislation making it illegal to circumvent copy protections, even when they're odious and prevent fair use.

Well I don't think its fair to characterize it as "gone", since it still does the job and is still available on some websites( thank you Finland). Sure "newer" versions will be gone. And unless Hollywood change their copy prevention codecs, which they haven't so far(maybe the newer HD formats?)...the Decrypter remains useful for those who use it.
But this is the age of the Internet, and some young kid out there amongst the billions will probably post a program to crack any new protection the Biggies will come up with just for the hell of it.

I think my brother told me some newer DVDs won't rip w/Decrypter, but I'm not sure.  And certainly a bright teenager can crack any encryption the Bigs elect to use.  While I'm against piracy on principle, I see nothing morally wrong with cracking & ripping a disc you yourself have purchased and own for your own personal use.

I remember a few years ago there was a reportedly-wonderful video server called the Kalidescope.  It had massive HD space and allowed you to rip all your DVDs to it and watch them from hard drive.  George Lucas himself owned one and spoke highly of it.  Even though the company that made & sold it obtained liscencing and paid the studios for it, they still turned around and sued them! :o

Yes that is correct, more and more newer DVD's won't rip with DVD Decrypter. Thankfully though, they all seem to rip fine with the software combo I mentioned above. That AnyDVD is updated very frequently and is just an excellent little application IMO...

I'll have to check into that software.  For informational purpose only, of course.

...and for us Macofiles: I have recently gotten good results with MactheRipper for ripping and Toast Titanium 7.1 for burning. The interesting function to me is to get around all the FBI/non-piracy screens that you're otherwise forced to watch at the start of a DVD.

Looks like DVD Decrypter has a new companion http://www.dvd43.com/ works like Anydvd but FREE  8)

While browsing TV channels QVC were selling an Archos multimedia player, the demonstrator clearly stated "Archos pay copyright duties" thus allowing users to take their DVDs & music on the move.
