Anyone moved on from modified Sonic Impact amps?

I know it's an old subject, but I was wondering if any of you have moved on to other inexpensive digital amps after maxed-out modding of their SI's? Why?

Moved from modded RWA Clari-T to CIA VMB-1 monoblocks because the speakers were just too inefficient (88 dB/w/m).  Note that street prices for both used are only about $100 apart and the VMB-1's are built like tanks in comparison.

Was impressed with the clarity and strength of it's 8 wpc, but imaging was poor IMO.

The 40 watt VMB-1's obviously have more power and therefore more control (mostly heard at bass frequencies).  Note that chip amps, like the VMB-1, are known to synergize well with single driver speakers.  Level of detail, imaging, and soundstaging are all improved over the Clari-T, especially imaging.  Instruments now take on their proper size, allowing small instruments to sound small and their sound to be more focused (defined).  The soundstage is much more 3D with instruments in their proper place (left/right, front/back, top/down, and in location/size relation with each other).

Unless you have truely crappy A/C, the VMB-1's (and probably any other good chip amps) IMO would smoke any of the modded Sonic Impact amps.  And Dusty has stopped building VMB-1's in favor of digital designs (unfortunately at about double the price).  What does that tell you how they'd compare?

Gainclones are definitely warmer sounding than the SI iterations - I've owned both.  I owned two of Vinnie's Clari-Ts and an AudioZone AMP-1.  The AMP-1 is The Piece I Should Not Have Sold.  Its warmish signature was perfect for my VMPS 626rs.  I do have a Gainclone en-route to the digs now.  I also just received Vinnie's Sig. 70's which are happily getting to know my speakers with some hard hitting techno as I write this.

The Clari-T's are more "clean" and "sterile" than the Gainclone sound.  Right now, my 626s are at my folks' place and I'm using their excellent Tannoy dual concentric monitors (which used to be mine).  The Tannoys are voiced to the warmer side and appreciate a neutral, fast, and detailed amplifier.  The Clari-T power is enough to push either pair of speakers though the Gainclone is definitely more powerful.

If you have more efficient speakers, like 92 db or above, the power difference won't be a big deal as the Clari-T plays WAY stronger than its 6 watts would indicate.  When I had Zu Druids which also tend toward a warmer presentation, the Clari-T and Modwright 9.0SE were an outstanding match that could bring the house down.  So, the power might or might not be a big deal.

The voicing of the speaker is more of a concern, IMO.  These amps sound very different from each other and neither is categorically superior.  Synergy is the goal.

Those are some interesting replies and thanks for taking the time. I agree that synergy is sooo important.  The low-buck digital world seems to be moving so fast and price/performance seems to be on the increase.  I hate to waste too much time beating a digital horse with my SI's, so before I would ever attempt to, now, max them out(in whatever of ways), I always like to look both ways first.  I have gone through a lot of nice gear through the decades, but now I'm having a tone of fun scaling back on my gear to see what kind of silk can be had from a sou's ear.  Right now, I've been using a set of Klipsch KLF-30's, or at least they started out that way.  I've totally reworked them to see just how far I could take them.  They don't even look much the same.  103db/watt doesn't hurt either.  My room set up is rather unconventional, but listeners are always surprised by the system's performance. I love going against the grain with my gear...it's fun.  I would like to try some different(inexpensive) incarnations of digital amps to get a wider scope on what my system likes. You never really know until you give some things a good try. So what other little digi-gems am I missing?

Here's one that some believe out performs the Clari-T's (which are no longer built anyway):

If you need battery power and like the "hairshirt" approach, look at this:

miklorsmith,

What Gainclone amp are you getting? I'm kinda interested in trying one built by Tim Rawson. They sometimes sell on AudiogoN for $150-$300 depending on chassis and power. I'm currently using a Reali-T @ 6 watts, or a couple of different 2A3 SETs @ 3.5 watts, so I obviously don't need a lot of power. I also previously owned a couple of different pairs of VMB-1s. I liked the first pair with my old Reference 3A MM DeCapos, but I later bought another pair to try with my DIY HempAcoustics and didn't like them as much.

Enjoy,

TIC

I've been having great fun building the amp kits from 41hz.com, his amp6 basic is a good one to start with. These offer a serious upgrade in power and sound quality from a modded SI amp, while costing very little.
