WHICH *ONLINE* REVIEWER SHOULD TEST ANGELUS?
« on: 4 Dec 2006, 09:16 pm »
OK!

So in the other poll we limited choices to online reviewers, and you all have given me a list of reviewers to consider. I've added a few in, as well - people I know that others enjoy reading and who I think are worthy company to the others mentioned in the list. i also put in a "None of the Above" option as a preemptive provision, lest someone ask for it after the fact.

So here's out next step! Pick someone you think should test the Angelus, put it through its paces and deliver a verdict of performance and value. Once you guy pick someone, I will approach them and let them know that - by popular demand! - I am approaching them for a review.

This is pretty fun, actually. I like getting everyone involved, and it's instructional for me, as well.

Looking forward to your votes!

Chris

here's a write in vote for Tyson Neidig.

He does the best (on-line) reviews of anyone I have ever read.

Maybe he could do one as he's convelesing from his heart attack?

Yikes! Heart attack? Should we prescribe a compressor/limiter?

I'll put his name in

So far it looks as if Srajan is headed toward a landslide victory - but for those folks who suggested some of the people listed that have ZERO votes, why not vote for the person you suggested in the first place? For instance: Marc, Doug and Doug are all capable and trustworthy people, IMHO, and also great suggestions ... yet they languish with no votes?

Don't get me wrong - I think Srajan is also capable and trustworthy, and I like him personally and appreciate his writing. I think he's got as much of "the right stuff" as anyone else.

But for all the noise made in this Industry Ads forums about the Angelus, you'd think the voting action on the reviewers would be somehow more active.

Did I set my expectations too high?

I'll modify the list to indicate the magazines they work for, if that's helpful.

Nobody from TNT?

That is the only publication I know of that does not have advertisements...

I guess it depends on what you want - for broad coverage, I think that Srajan might have the best impact, lots of respect for his work.

As for my vote, well, I say keep it in the Audiocircle family - no ads here either!

No one asked for anyone from TNT. I like Lucio's site, though ... I'll put him up there.

Srajan is certainly ahead in the polling!

As for ad-free sites: I have serious doubts about advertising being a corrupting influence. I know it's fairly common these days to think that advertisers get the best treatment, but I can say without a doubt that my products have been treated fairly and received well at 6moons, Soundstage, Enjoy The Music / Superior Audio and I haven't been an advertiser ( I did try to promote Peak Consult with a few ads a couple of years back, but I haven't done an online baner-ad in forever ).

In 1999 I had the original review for my Stereovox SEI-600 at TNT-Audio, as well, and I appreciate Lucio's approach (and championing of 2-channel audio), so I'm no stranger to either set of circumstances. But I can say unequivocally that I do not believe advertising corrupts a magazine. There may be a few reviewers out there who, individually, are corrupt - but they're not usually infectious. I won't have anything to do with those guys ... once you dip your foot in that grease trap, you'll never be able to fully wipe it off.

Indeed.
Cyprus is the place to be, if you can fly all the way it seems. Perhaps Srajan will spin Beach Boys song I get around on them?
I mention this song of course on the behalf of the complex voices and the great variety of stuff going on.
And they clap in it. A good acidtest!

Srajan Ebaen gets my vote.  There are some other very good writers/reviewers on that list, but Srajan has a good mix of popularity (ie is widely read) and credibility.  He sometimes tends to use more purple prose than is necessary, but overall he does a good job of describing what he's hearing.  He'd be a good choice if you had to narrow it down to just one.

TNT-Audio is a very good, non political site for reviews. I have a review on TNT for our original RAM 301 that was designed in conjunction with Dan Wright. The reviewer is actually a member here at AC now but no longer with TNT.

I possibly have another review forthcoming on TNT.

I will give a vote for TNT but I cannot comment on any one reviewer any longer.

6-Moons looks to be a very good site for unbiased reviews. I still have a problem navigating that site though.

I still enjoy viewing Enjoy The Music as well.

I have never advertised on any online review website.

TWO THINGS OF IMPORTANCE:

In the interest of full disclosure I am submitting the following:

1) I have been in touch with Srajan to see if he is available to review the speakers. He's told me that he's way booked up and unable to take on another project in the near term. Thus it would seem that 6moons is a no-go for the speaker - at least in the forseeable future.

2) After that comminuque' I then asked him for rate-cards for the site in order to advertise there - SO - you should now or soon see an ad for Angelus on the site.

I had previously said that I hadn't been advertising on the online mags, but I needed to do something for Angelus to raise awareness and so I began there.

Just out of curiosity, why wouldn't you ask all of them?

Also, some unsolicited comments....

I went to your site and was immediately impressed with the mood and overall feel.  Very cool.  However, I am not sure what you do or sell.  Are you a speaker manufacturer?  Or do you make art? sell instruments?  The wording is a bit too flowery for me to follow the actual nature of your business.  I'm guessing you're a consortium of 4 brands based on the dealers page.  However, you have no products.  I did see one photo of a speaker...

Anyway, it's essential to have a place where reviewers can point readers to read more about the products, view specs, and read the design philosophy.  If I read a review about your speakers and was pointed to the SuperFi site, I would just be confused.

Full disclosure; I build websites, market and promote products and services, and provide business consulting.

So, that's my 2 cents.

Just go one step down the list then!
I also could suggest Greg Weaver (PFO)
He's not on the list I know.
One could maybe ask the top 3 after voting has ended?
Whoever says yes, gets the honor!  :D
After all this vote is a "moment in time" for the Who's more known/liked at the moment out there.
As we all know well, writing a smashing and true to the heart review does go down well.
Of course Superfi, you are well within your rights to submit Angelus to anyone
you find prudent, regardless of this vote, that my view on this matter.
Also one must take note: Quickly getting feedback for the producers is a good thing!
One can not expect perfection, but always do ones best. A review is a fieldtest, such is this vote also.
