Removing output capacitor ?
« on: 4 Dec 2006, 08:30 pm »
A few users on Audiogon have removed the single yellow capacitor across the speaker terminals of their Ref 9SE, and say it improved the sound.
Is it safe to do that ?

YES.  It is a matter of taste :) so we never publish this as an option.
If you cut it out and later decided that you don't like the sound, we have to charge you labor fee to solder it back, unless you can solder yourself.  Most manufacturers will not allow you to mess with their products but we're flexible and such a small mod is OK.

Well.... I guess massively increasing the already large residual common mode rfi noise transmitted via your loudspeaker cables could be construed as a matter of 'taste' . By removing that capacitor you make that filter 6db/octave rather than 12db/octave. Then again, many often perceive increased noise as increased 'air' and resolution. I guess that if you don't care about your own (or neighbor's) FM reception or bathing your other components in rfi, you can do whatever floats your boat.
