Is Oboe PCB still available
« on: 4 Dec 2006, 03:05 pm »
It's been a while since I last visted this board.  Over the weekend, it occured to me that I can really use a high quality opamp-based preamp PCB to complement an active crossover that I'm working on.  From my memory, the Oboe fits the bill, but it seems to be gone from Jim's offering.

Is the half-kit still available?

I still have plenty of OBOE 1/2-kits.  Giving them away for $39.  Just order any other item for $39 and put a note at bottom of order form that you really want an OBOE.

Thanks Jim.  Just put my order in.  Want to grab one of these before everyone figures out what a great deal it is.  For the price of a Bugle board, you get the Bugle AND powersupply, plus the preamp and headphone amp that the user can chose not to use.  How great is that?!

Yeah, that's what I thought when I designed it.  But the marketplace response was deafening silence, so clearly it was not what people wanted.  That's ok, everyone has a few duds.  Technically, it is a nice machine, though.  I use one in the shop all the time.  Makes for easy checkout of other gear.

Hi Jim.  This is where the wave of questions start.  I'm starting to source out parts and have a few questions about the design.  I'm referencing the manual I downloaded from your website, with schem dated Feb 23, 2005.

What are the values of R30 and R40.  It appears on the schematic but not on the parts list.

I'm planning on connecting an active XO board I've built to the power supply, increasing the number of opamps by 6.  I'm pretty sure the 400mA transformer can handle a total of 11 opamps, but can you please confirm?  If I need to go bigger, I can always mount the transformer off-board.

thx.

R30 is for optional cartridge loading.  R40 was put in just in case I wanted to add a zobel snubber on the headphone output.  This, of course, turns out to be headphone dependent, so I just don't use it.

I forget how much headroom there is in the power supply.  You might want to buy the 7W version of the  tranny.  Same footprint, just taller.  I would think the extra load is ok.  If you find not enough headroom on the regulators, lower the series 10 ohm resistors to a smaller value.
