Clarinet select switch help.
« on: 4 Dec 2006, 04:41 am »
Hello!  I filled my Clarinet board up over the weekend.  It is a lot easier after doing a Cornet2!  I am a little stumped over the selector switch and the limit pins.  Do the directions for 7:30, 12 & 3 o'clock refer to:

1.  The numbers on the plate on the back of the selector unit?

2.  Looking at the shaft with the bottom of the board facing up?

3.  Looking at the shaft with the socket side facing up?

If I set it at 7:30 and put the pins in at 12 and 3 the pointer of the knob starts at 1:30 and clicks clockwise from there instead of the knob pointer being at roughly 10 o'clock and rotating clockwise.  Any help appreciated.  I looked up the specs on-line and got even more confused!  Peace.  Robert

4.  Looking at the shaft with pins facing down.

I am on the home stretch to finishing my Clarinet.  The flat part of the shaft on the volume, balance and select are facing up.  I am not using the chicken heads.  I have some round knobs that have a set screw on the bottom.  It appears that the chicken head knobs have the set screw on the bottom also.  I have the volume, balance and select soldered to the same side of the board as the caps and resistors like in the picture.  What am I missing here?     Peace.  Robert

Th flat part of shaft will not line up with set screw.  That's why I had it arranged on the flip side, so that you get the "best" fit.  The original problem was that there were not enough decent choices for a PCB mount select switch from DigiKey.  Mouser offered much better solutions, but sticking with the half-kit concept, I kept everything from just two vendors.

No problem.  I can grind a flat spot on the metal shaft on the selector switch.  I though I was being a bonehead and really missing something on setting up the selector switch!  Peace.  Robert

First try your knobs without bothering to file/grind a flat.  While the
Grayhill selector switch seems a tad stiff, I've found that it works fine
with the two knobs I've tried without having a flat and without having
to torque down on the set screws.   On the flip side, there's no time
like the present to work the shaft.  (Especially if you haven't soldered
the switch to the PCB yet.)

As an aside, for difficult shafts there's a collet style fastener which
some knobs use -- even small knobs.  If you've ever used a (wood
working) router or shaper table, it's the same principle: a collet
which holds the router bit.  Those puppies are like pit bulls and do
not let go!  (I've seen them used with great success in heavy use
scenarios, such as hands-on science exhibits in museums.)
