Evolution Acoustics MM3 Loudspeaker
« on: 3 Dec 2006, 05:38 pm »
Anyone else notice this thread over at AVS Forum:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=761168

Page down on the thread and you will see pictures. Pretty nice looking gear & setup. These new speakers are replacing
Vandersteen 5As.

Another forum member is going to put the MM3's up against VR7SE's and maybe VR11's.

Very interesting reading and I am definitely jealous!

Those Vandy 5A's are sitting about 8' away from me as I type...   aa

Unfortunately, due to my back acting up, they aren't hooked up.

I hope to hear my friend's MM3's in the next week or two.

So far I know he is extremely pleased.

Here is a picture:

The MM3's apparently came as 1887 pounds of freight, so those Vandies must seem kind of flyweight to him now!

The 5A's didn't seem that light getting them into and out of the Odyssey!

Guess I need to get back to the weight room.   :weights:

Zybar,

Yes, now this all makes sense. I recall reading one of your posts a while back, when you highly praised your friend's system: 5A's with Dartzeel preamp & amp.

I will be looking for your comments on the 5A's in comparison to the Salk HT3's.

George....
I see Frank's room is 17 x 21....good size. I would of thought one would need a bigger room for the MM3's (there big-RMAF), but from his posts it ....sounds OK. 8)

I have heard both the VR7SE and the MM3, and while not in the same system/room set up, I might swing well toward the MM3

I have heard the different VR speakers, Kharma, MBL, Wilson, Avalon, etc... and I think the MM3's are their equal or better at a much lower price.

If you have ONLY $40k to spend on a pair of speakers, then the MM3 is a no-brainer.

My buddy heard this exact system on Friday.
Quote:  "I was blown away!"

And his system's not exactly mincemeat.
See it here:

Lucky me...
He lives around the corner, and his order is in, so I will be hearing the Evolutions shortly.

His little Marten Design Coltrane costs more than the MM3!!! So is he selling the Coltrane?

Not sure....maybe he's doing an exchange with dealer?
In any event, he is definitely going for the Evolutions.

While I know show conditions aren't an ideal place to make a decision (especially such a large financial one), the MM3's were so much better than the Coltranes at the show that it wasn't even close.

It was actually sad how bad the Coltranes sounded the two times I heard them (on different days).

You are referring to the Coltrane Supreme's which are a $250,000 four tower system.
The Coltrane's are quite different, and although not inexpensive, cost considerably less.
If you are going to trash a product, at least get your facts straight.

Sorry I made a mistake on my identification.

Thanks for correcting it.

Cool down. I think Zybar was just a little "lazy" to type the "supreme" word at the end of the coltrane.
It's all so easy to offend people in this hobby, especially when you said something "bad" about certain things that people own. Should the person be free to express his personal opinion, should he refrains from it, or use a milder language? Should we all be more tolerant to hearing "bad reviews"? Audio is such a subjective matter. Not all the people I know who happened to be at the RMAF liked the MM3 for example. I personally do not think that the Coltrane Supremes sounded "worse" than the MM3, perhaps not as detailed, but I find the MM3 setup a little mechanical to my taste. Martin Design would be crazy to sell the Coltrane Supremes at that price if they don't think that it's better than the little Coltrane.
I think "price" tend to influence people's judgement. In absolute sense, the Coltrane Supremes may sound just fine, but when you factor in the price, people expect a hell lot more, they expect it to be an "outright" winner that everyone should be able to come to a conclusion immediately when they hear it. Funny, but for people who're well-exposed to many different systems at many different price-ranges, they should know that such "outright winner" does not exsit, no matter how much money you spent.

Point well taken
My apologies to George for my tone.
I tend to be (too) defensive of my system.

Carl,

Thanks for the apology.

I do stand by my view that the sound was quite bad at the show (as were many other rooms).

That doesn't mean they are bad speakers.

I also do want to not get into the whole value debate - that is for each person to decide.

As long as you enjoy your system and are fine with the purchase that should be all that matters.

Again, welcome to AudioCircle.  I look forward to your posts.

George

I had a chance to hear these at the show. Some of the worst distortion I've ever heard come out of a large speaker. It made me cringe. You could do much better for that kind of money.

Which ones?
The Evolution or the Coltrane?
