I would take 'matching serial numbers' to indicate a pair of tweeters.

See below.  This is a pair of them with matching serial numbers, purchased at a time when they were I believe $440 if I am not mistaken.  Even with the PE pricing at $340 for the pair, it's still a 34% discount for tested drivers in original factory boxing.
