Subwoofer , how to connect with integrated amp
« on: 1 Dec 2006, 06:51 pm »
Hi,

My current amp only has rec - outs and my future tube amp ( still not sure wich one) will probably be the same...

Is it possible to connect a sub?   I read something about connecting it to the binding posts of my amp? and some speaker to line-level thing?     I looked up my speakers specs,  and they only go down to 70hz...  I also read they don't use a network for the Low-frequency ?   This could mean they are fairly easy to drive with a SET ( off-topic,   that's a different thread I made )

What should I look for when buying a  subwoofer? ( connection wise I mean)

I would apreciate some advice :)

Thanks

Here's a link to some of the ways of hooking up our subs . . . some of these means will apply to a number of other subs as well:

Some subwoofers accept speaker level connections. I think this is a limiting situation and you might consider an integrated with both preamp out and amp in jacks or separates to allow more (possibly better?) connection options.

I think you'll regret driving your speakers full range.

Hey robert, I've experimented using sprk. cables from my amps as well as from my preamp. At first I tried from my pre with good results. As I had only one output at the time I made an adapter of male RCA's to 2 female with a good quality wire[Monster sells agood one if your not handy].Bass was powerfull yet seemed not from the whole cloth.Played with phase invert, locked it in sounded good but I felt it could be improved.Connected sub directly from amp with AntiCable and heard an instantly a wholeness to the presentation. The biggest supprise was the improvement in midbass.Furthor improvement came from raiseing the off the floor 22% of my room height[an ASC Reco.].I fired the sub with the driver facing right in stead of the downfiring position. These two tweaks greatly improved the quality of bass the most.I run my main sprks. without full range without an external crossover[flat to 60hz]with the sub crossover @ 55hz.In my opinion the first thing to do once all connected is MAKE SURE THE PHASE OF SUB MATCHES your main sprks.Hope this helps       Prepare to be rocked

May the bass be with you rollo

Robert,

I've been very impressed with the Velodyne DD series subs, which have both pre and line-level inputs, overall.  They do the auto-EQ thing which is extremely useful for room tuning.  Includes auto-adjusting of phase too.  Would most likely blend very well with your speakers.

The smallest one, the 10, can be had used for about $1000.
