USB cable for HagUSB: Ferrite cores OK?
« on: 1 Dec 2006, 04:04 am »
In general, should it matter if the USB cable used with the HagUSB, has a ferrite core at one end?

(Some USB cables have these ferrite cores for EMI supression, and some don't)

Here's a picture of a USB cable that has such a ferrite, to show what I mean:

Jim, what are your thoughts about this please?

Ferrite is fine.  Probably good.  It will have no effect on the internal signals.  Don't believe the fools who will try to tell you that it slows the signal edges.  It does no such thing.  The ferrite is configured as a common mode balun, so it only decouples the two piecec of equipment at RF.  That is, it helps to keep the cable from turning into a broadcast antenna.
