Help with Olive Musica - music stops and unit freezes (intermittent)

Hi, I have an intermittent problem with my Musica and was wondering if anyone else had come across this.  The music will suddenly stop playing in the middle of the song.  The unit will then not respond to any of the buttons, while the display will gently "pulse".  If I power cycle the unit then I come back to the Olive screen, which pulses gently but otherwise doesn't "boot up" to the main menu.  To clear the problem I turn off the Olive and let it be for a couple of hours.

This has happened to me about 3-4x so far but seems to be getting more frequent.  Any comments or suggestions would be helpful.

Regards,

- Jay

Hi,
I'm having the same problem and even did a post about it here a few weeks ago.Mine started or I noticed it when I experimented with an external dac.
I've done literally about 6 recoveries and also did a total delete files(222 cd's) and recovery.
No luck,in fact in the 2.1 version(the version you get after you do a recovery) I started to get these pops on songs which was an old problem that the software upgrade had gotten rid of when I first had the Musica in March.
I was told that there have been a few complaints about dac compatability so I did some troublshooting w/o the dac connected ...no luck.
I shipped it out for repair ...thry should get it today...we'll see how they deal with this.
Did you upgrade to the new software?
It also happens if you use it as a cd player and just throw in a cd to listen to...spooky.

Hi Guys,

This *might* be the cause of problems:

When you rip a CD to the hard drive.... when it is finished that means that it is only finished putting the data of the CD onto the hard drive.  It then does the conversion of the CD content to FLAC in the background.  You'll see a small blinking icon of a arrow pointing to a musical note on the top of the screen.  This means that the unit is still "busy" in converting the CD to FLAC.  It is best to wait until this is finished before loading in a new CD to the hard drive.  Otherwise, you can overload it and it is going to try to keep converting to FLAC and you might be trying to play music at the same time and then it might freeze up from the overload.

Here is what you do to clear out any files that are "in limbo" on your Olive:

Settings >> Maintenance >> Check Library >> Execute >> OK

Settings >> Maintenance >> Check Music Folder >> Execute >> OK

I did this to ZLS's Musica a while back when he reported similar problems and its seems fine.  I never had this problem with my Symphony.

reddmadder,

Please let us know what Olive determines the trouble with your unit to be.

ALSO, I am going to move this post to the "Square Circle" where hopefully it will get more exposure (all Olive owners, not just RWA modded Olives).

Hi,
I've tried that procedure several times and also waited for the cd to import all to no avail.
I think it could be a virus that gets imported with the new software upgrade...which is why it doesn't leave when you do a recovery.
Just a guess.

Thanks, Vinnie.  I gave this a try today and about 9-10 songs/files were deleted.  Hope this does the trick!

Reddmadder, do let us know what you hear from Olive.

I did what Vinnie suggested but the problem is still there....  my Musica froze again within an hour.

reddmadder

Hi,
As of last Friday they were trying to duplicate the problem at their facility.
I told them it's totally random and that they have to literally have the Musica playing all day since it can ,in my experience, happen within a few minutes or within a few hours.

P.S. Olive also mentioned they were looking at the motherboard.

Redd, thanks a lot... hope that they are able to figure it out soon and it doesn't require sending the unit back in!  My first thought was that there were errors on the hard drive.

Hi Jay,

Sorry to hear that didn't do the trick.

I'm not sure what the wrong with your unit, but I will gladly take a look at it for you and spend time figuring out the problem.

Hopefully Redd will get some good information (thanks for sharing, Redd!) and it will also apply to your unit, but if it does not, I'm here to help... but I need a defective unit in my hands to hopefully figure it out.

Best regards,

Vinnie

Vinnie,

Thank you - I very much appreciate your offer.  I'd like to give Olive a chance to get back to Redd in case there is something that can be done without shipping my Musica across the Pacific and taking up your time.  In the meatime I'll continue to use the Musica and see if I can figure out a pattern for the problem, as these inputs from me and others would help to trouble shoot was is going on.

What I may do next is backup to an external HD.  Is there a way to verify the integrity of the FLAC files on the external HD using my PC?  My gut feel is that there is an issue with the Musica's hard drive or some of the music files.  But, if so, that doesn't explain why Redd sometimes has problems with CDs he plays directly on the Musica (I assume he isn't ripping at the time).

The problem has sometimes surfaced within the first hour of a listening session, so that battery is nearly fully charged and voltage shouldn't be a problem.  Other times, the problem surfaces after several hours of listening.

Hi,
Olive is sending my Musica back today,I haven't gotten a full report yet but should get one tomorrow. The only hint I got over the phone was that it was a motherboard replacement issue but that isn't confirmed.
  I'll keep you posted.

JayS,
If you didn't see my other thread Olive confirmed it was the motherboard and they replaced it.

Redd,

Thanks for the update.  Would be curious to know more details when you get the report, if you don't mind.  I believe your Olive was modded?  Did Olive have a problem with that?  Did the replacement board have to get modded by them to fit?  Some mods, e.g. RWA, removes a board or part of a board to make space for the battery.

Jay,
My Olive was the stock version...no mods.
I still have about 4 months left on the one year warranty,so it was a freebie repair.
You should call Olive and let them know about your problem.
BTW,I was told that if anyone is experiencing problems with playlists it can be a bug with the new 2.3.2 software.
The new software 2.3.3. should have been out by last week but is postponed till (hopefully) the end of this week.
