Starting a new system?
« on: 27 Nov 2006, 06:39 am »
I'd like to start into vinyl, and make a decent system for school.

At home, my dad gave me his old equipment that sounds decent but is sort of falling apart and I'm not sure whether I should start from scratch or use some of this in my new one.

My "current" equipment
A pair of Spendor Ls3/5a speakers
Meitner Audio STR-50 Amp
Lazarus Cascade Basic Preamp

Now, I really have no clue if any of this stuff is decent.  I was looking to spend around 1000 dollars or less on this, and that's a total for all new equipment.  I've searched on the internet for hours, but there are just so many products and combinations, I figured I would make a new thread.

Thanks

Looks like you're off to a great start--wish I had inherited that type of gear when I started!!! :thumb:

Rat Shack sells these Caig contact cleaner/enhancer kits for something like $38 or so.  That should be your first *audio* purchase.  Read the instructions and clean/preserve all contacts--including tube sockets, fuses & fuse holders, speaker terminals, AC power connections, etc.   Make sure the tubes are all good to go and if not, get new replacements.  You don't need expensive ones, just adequate replacements.

If you don't have speaker wire I suggest you get some runs of Carol 16/4 in-wall speaker wire from Home Depot or Lowes (30c/ft) and Rat Shack speaker terminals and make your own.  As for interconnects, there's plenty of choices around to drive anyone mad... :duh:

Regarding the vinyl issue, there's plenty of choices...I am a KAB modded Technics 1200 fan.  You can start reading the KAB site to get great vinyl info but truly, it's best if you familiarize first with your new toys.  There's no hurry. :nono:

It's a journey, not a destination...

Take care,

Don't "overuse" the contact cleaner.  (Don't leave a residue, especially enough to cause a short.)

If you're not into DIY good quality, reasonably priced cabling for all your audio needs can be found at Blue Jean Cable, Element Cable, or Signal Cable.

I recommend hanging around here, checking out audiogon.com for used stuff, and searching through ecoustics.com for "professional" equipment reviews to discover what's out there and what to look for.

Find out what kinds of music you like, then listen to it live (the only true gold standard for fidelity).  Once you've learned what the "real thing" sounds like and are familiar with available equipment you'll be ready to shop.  When shopping, don't try to seriously listen to more than 4 or 5 pieces per visit as the ear gets easily confused and aurial memory fads.  Unfortunately most retail outlets are poorly staffed (don't know much), poorly set-up (typically open spaces that aren't homelike even if not competing with the sounds from other systems/listeners), and poorly equipped (mostly HT and stuff aspiring to mid-fi status).  Hopefully its better where you live, ask your Dad.

Attending local audiophile meetings is helpful and audio trade shows are a real treat.

Just how "beat up" is your gear?
You may be able to refurb what you have pretty reasonably
and have a pretty fair amount left for a turntable...

Spending a thousand dollars for old equipment is too much, because that amount is as good as buying brand new equipments.
