I have had trouble getting my DVD+Rs to even read on Dells with a CD-r/DVD-ROM. Therefore I had to break up a DVD full of pictures to multiple CDs for family and friends with these Dell desktops.

What is the compatability equation for recordable DVDs on these types of DVD-ROMs? Will DVD-R be a guaranteed fix?

You mentioned it's an old Dell.  One alternative would be to upgrade to a new DVD burner (or at least a DVD reader) in the Dell.  If you watch the Staples/Office Depot/Office Max/Best Buy/Circuit City/CompUSA ads for a few weeks you can probably get a very good quality unit for $30 or so (maybe after rebate).  I've been fooling around with CD or DVD burners since the 2x (CDR) days and I've found that these things are constantly improving in quality and reliability, and they are extremely cheap now.

If you don't want to upgrade your hardware (which may be wearing out and going out of alignment, thus causing your problems) there are a number of sites that review DVD media.  Here's one:
