Help ripping Sony CDs without problems
« on: 17 Nov 2006, 06:36 pm »
I have Alicia Keys "Unplugged" and each time I rip it with EAC the playback is filled with skipping.  This CD comes equipped with the FBI anti-piracy crap on it.

I tried holding CTRL down after popping in the CD which prevents the CD screen from popping up but the rips always suck.  Any help?

Try ripping it with a Mac if you know someone who has one.  My Seal IV CD would not rip on a PC but would rip fine on a Mac Powerbook.

To my knowledge, ripping a cd for personal use is not a crime...nor is ripping a protected one.  There is a program called Easy CD-DA Extractor which claims to be able to rip protected discs.  It can be downloaded here:  http://www.poikosoft.com/.  You can use it for 30 days before you have to pay for it.

I pulled the following off their help menu.

Quote
Copy Protected CD's
Easy CD-DA Extractor can copy so called "Copy Protected" CD's. The "Copy Protected CD" means that the manufacturer of the CD has mangled the CD so that it cannot be read on computers. They usually add a fake data session to the end of discs, so when the CD is put into the CD/DVD-drive of a computer, the contents of the disc is shown as data not audio.

The ability of copying "Copy Protected" CD's also depends of the hardware, so it is possible that your CD/DVD-drive has a problem with these discs. If the hardware has problems, there's not much Easy CD-DA Extractor can do about it.

Easy CD-DA Extractor automatically detects the contents of the Copy Protected CD, but in the case that the auto feature does not seem to work (the tracks are not shown correctly on the main screen or you see only one or more data tracks) you can use the "Read Table Of Contents" menu under "Action" menu. Use "Session Analyze" or "Sub-Code Analyze" to get correct contents of the disc.

If you hear clicks, cracks, or pops in the audio files extracted from a Copy Protected CD, then you have a Copy Protected CD that has intentionally made errors. Record companies intentionally make errors on these discs, so you wouldn't be able to copy them with your computer. In this case, simply set the "Read Mode" in "Options" / "CD-reader Settings" to "Error Recovery & Repair", re-rip the CD, and voilá; you have a perfect copy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some new Copy Protected CD's contain a nasty protection; They install a driver to your computer when you insert the CD in your CD-ROM drive (when autorun is launched). (this behaviour can be compared to a virus)

Record Companies that have used this protection: Sony, Epic (Sony)

The driver is a CD-ROM filter driver that causes problems for CD-ripping applications, the CD-ripping seems to be working fine, but the read data is garbage.

If you wish to copy such a CD, there's three ways to bypass the protection:

Don't let the Windows run the AUTORUN application of the CD by holding down the SHIFT while inserting the CD or disable the Windows autorun permanently.

Delete the driver (cannot write instructions here, since the filename of the driver seem to vary between different CD's)

Start the computer in diagnostic mode (Windows XP):   (you can also start Windows in Safe Mode)

Click "Start" / "Run..."

Type msconfig.exe

Choose "Diagnostic Startup"

Click "OK" and restart your computer

Rip the CD

Restore the Normal Startup mode (like in steps 1-3, but choose "Normal Startup");

"Help ripping Sony CDs without problems "

First get a PC that is dedicated to dealing with Sony CDs:

-off the network/internet
-plan to wipe and reload OS on the hard drive after burning Sony CDs
-wear a grounding strap at all times
-protective goggles would not hurt

Seriously, be VERY CAREFUL when attempting to rip Sony CDs

Sony CDs can put a ROOTKIT on you system.

" EFF releases a partial list of CDs believed infected to infected with Sony's rootkit."

" Mac users shouldn't be smug -- Sony's audio CDs also contain an app that patches OS X's kernel with unspecified restriction-software"

" Princeton DRM researcher Alex Halderman reports on the other malicious software found on Sony CDs, a Suncomm product called MediaMax. MediaMax is a vicious little bug, which spies on you and reports on your deeds to the mothership."

And for the gamers....

" Sony patents a piece of software that can prevent you from playing a game that's been inserted into one console on another console; speculation is that this is destined for the PS3. Kiss game rentals, loaning and re-sale goodbye. Also, if your PS3 breaks or is stolen, you might as well toss out all your games, they're useless without it."

And lest you think the threat is over:

" A Finnish researcher discovers that the "uninstaller" for Sony's rootkit leaves a ton of crap behind that hackers can exploit -- he can reboot your computer just by getting you to load a web-page"

Accoriding to some of my friends, Sony Has removed the rootkit software, but trying to copy Sony CDs now results in processes running that are associated with other well-known malwear.  This means they acn not be traced to Sony.  When I reformatted my hard dask after copying a sony disk, 14 process disappeared!  We didn't even bother to figure out what they were doing.  It's too time-consuming a process.

To reformat your disk, write all your non-system data and program files to DVDs,refromat your HD; then re-install windows and then copy the files back.  It takes about an hour the first time, quicker after that.

Don'tdo this on a businessw computer.  Just your home computer.

As mentioned before, how about we stop buying the damn Sony CD's...greedy pigs.  They make too much profit anyway and screw the artists. The artists will make their money by touring, hopefully.  When i pay my $13 for a CD that should include whatever copyright fees or what have you and I should be allow to utilize it how I see fit for my personal use.

The high and might piracy buggers need to stop kidding themselves, this world is going to the crapper and people are crying about ripping a cd to your PC.  Only because it's taking money fom their greedy palms is all, it's no ethical issue, please.  Burning and ripping has sparked a revolution in music playback...the MP3 player and so on, without that lord knows where the music industry would be. Sony is just mad their crap inventions don't do well, if the MP3 player was the minidisc I bet they wouldn't be complaining because then they'd be selling millions of minidisc players and cleaning up on the backend.

I just bought Santana's "All That I Am" under Arista records with is now under sony I guess.  Now I can't rip the damn CD right or with fear of some bug on my system.  So now I won't be buying another Santana CD and I'll be checking extra careful for the CD's I buy and won't be buying any artist on a sony related label.

These greedy corporate buggers are really starting to get to me.  Corporate America steals millions from consumers at every turn but you want to jail a 17 yr old for burning some cd's. This country is so damn corrupt and the most corrupt sure do cry like school girls when the tables get turned on them a bit, classic privileged mentality..I'll anybody have anything but me.

Oh yeah, you see that gas is going back up now that the elections are over........we are so damn stupid it's laughable.
Sign me up for the next revolution, it's been too long.
Damn kids are dying for that blood oil and I can't burn em a copy of "Rockin' in the Free World"

WHEN ARE WE GONNA START GIVING A DAMN AGAIN!
WE HAVE BECOME CONDITIONED TO BEING TREATED LIKE POWERLESS NIMRODS THAT WE NOW BELIEVE THAT"S WHAT WE ARE.

A few of the most meaningful words I've heard in the 21st century were from Fiona Apple on an MTV award show, she got up to accept her award and stated "This World is BULLSH*T, IF YOU BELIEVE THIS..."  MTV may have never played her videos again and most just didn't get it but I got it and maybe a few others but most just thought she was messing up their party.

Thanks for the rant

But seriously as the saying goes "If You Don't Stand Up For Something, You'll Fall For Anything"

Mac users shouldn't be smug -- Sony's audio CDs also contain an app that patches OS X's kernel with unspecified restriction-software

On the Mac you have to specifically hunt for and install the malware; it is not automatically installed when you insert the CD as in the PC case.

I am super pissed about this CD.  I am trying Easy CD-DA Extractor but it is taking a long time.  I will then try and figure out if some abnormal processes are running due to this CD.

Rob,

What's wrong with Alicia Keys?  I think her music is pretty good.  Plus, she looks like my g/f  :thumb:

Any suggestions of singers you prefer more of a similar style?

Alicia's music is pretty good and i you G/F looks like that then you're doing pretty good too  :thumb:

Once she told me she was going to put some milk and cream in my hot chocolate, I knew she was a keeper.  You can't always get milk and cream, most times it's just water  :)

I've read that Microsoft's Malicious Software removal tool will remove the Sony Rootkit. Have you tried it?

It's a tool that Microsoft makes available for free. If you go to their home page then to the Security link there will be a link to the Malicious Software removal tool. I can't give you more details because I'm using a Mac computer at the moment. I think there are a few options as to how to run the software.
