How about it.....any Blues fans?

Hey y'all...

I'm a long time blues lover. Just picked up a great CD (which comes with a DVD also) "Buried Alive In The Blues"; ( Chicago Blues Reunion; Out The Box Records ) and it's really good.

A neat collection of old blues greats (most even older than me!): Barry Goldberg; Corky Siegal; Nick Gravenites; Sam Lay; Harvey Mandel; Tracy Nelson....

If any of you remember the late sixties and the likes of The Paul Butterfield Band; The Electric Flag; Mother Earth; Siegal-Schwall, et-al; you'll love this CD. The DVD has interviews and clips; and it is indeed a collectors piece if you like the blues, as I do.

Curious to hear other recommendations from you blues hounds out there....

I have the same CD and like it a lot.  Another good CD, but in a slightly different vein is Blue Rider Trio on Mapleshade Records.  It's acoustic blues, but a really excellent recording.

....Older than you....get outta here.... :jester:

How about some English blues.... :guitar:

John Mayall......with Peter Green
John Mayall......with Eric Clapton
(Newer) Peter Green
Rory Gallagher
Climax Blues Band
Savoy Brown
Early...Fleetwood Mac

OK....the above are more "electric" blues and English.....I stayed away from the normal picks...BB King, Albert King, Freddie King, Luther Allison, Little Milton, Johnny Winter, Canned Heat....ect.

One other...if you don't have it...get it...Muddy Waters.......(the MFSL release is excellent)

Ah I love that old John Mayall stuff... had the vinyl "Vacation" ..... Ten hours in a plane england left behind, here in LA wonder what I'll find...

Still have an old CD "Raw Blues" [London 820 479-2], a compilation of John Mayall, Peter Green, Eric Clapton, Curtis Jones, Otis Spann, Steve Anglo and Champion Jack Dupree.
Not the best recording but still great. :thumb: :thumb:

Also have Otis Spann "This is the Blues" [Roots RTS33014]  :thumb: :thumb:

hey Chris: yes I DO resemble that remark :lol:...thanks for the Muddy Waters tip; that's one I don't have. (The guys on the CD I mentioned used to hang out on the south side with Muddy Waters; Buddy Guy, etc.)

And yeah, I really like the John Mayall stuff, Greg. 'Jazz/Blues Fusion' is one of my favorites.

R_burke, I've been meaning to try some Mapleshade stuff. Thanks for the tip  :thumb:

Another in the Chicago vein..."My Labors" by Nick Gravenites. The cut 'Moon Tune' is awesome. Painfully slow, with Michael Bloomfield playing the guitar like, out of his mind. (prolly was!)

I have a fairly decent collection of the Blues, probably about 100 discs or so and some LP's as well. One that is not a very good recording but has some fabulous music is Chicago: The Blues Today! These recordings are from 1965, very raw but very powerful.

I remember bringing a vinyl copy of John Mayall's Chicago Line to the Midwest Audio Fest a few years back and one of the visitors to the room spotted it and begged to hear some "real music and not audiophile approved crap". He sat and listened to the entire album side. :)

..yeah, Mike...all my Mayall stuff is on vinyl.

Another fun band is Roomful of Blues. "Under One Roof" is a good cd; as well as "Turn It On! Turn It Up!"

For Chicago style blues, and, IMHO possibly the greatest blues album ever, my vote goes to Magic Sam - West Side Soul. Recorded on 1967 just before his untimely death at the age of 32, this raw recording gets the blues just right.

Another great blues album is Junior Wells' Hoodoo Man Blues. Wells on harmonica and Buddy Guy on guitar tear it up in this 1965 recoeding.

Records like these were the inspiration for all those British blues bands that Chris/Lonewolf mentions above. I love the British stuff, but this is somehow more real to me.

Fun topic.

Savoy Brown -- had quite a few good blues albums

Zephyr ---  first album i think ---- no album name, just Zephyr ..........  Tommy Bolin, Candie Givens

ZZ Top ---- first album more bluesy than later stuff ........

:D  Noe you're talking my language

1. Otis Spann-Good Morning Mr Blues & The Blues Never Die
2. Sonny Boy Willamson-Keep It To Ourselves
3. Andrew Vachss Safe House

I would be remiss if I did not mention that a lot of the music mentioned here is "Chicago Blues"  There is an independent record store, The Chicago Jazz Mart that is owned and operated by Bob Koester.  Mr. Koester also owns and operates Delmark Records, and great source of Blues.
We can all bemoan the passing of the independent record store, but here is a great one that still exists.  It needs and deserves our support!

P.S. They also have a great supply of LP's

ZLS; thanks for the heads-up on the Chicago Jazz Mart!  :D

BTW; it's a hard album to come by, but if anyone is/was into Michael Bloomfield...try to find "Live at the Old Waldorf". Nick Gravenites does a few vocals; Mark Naftalin plays the piano; and a rare find..Roger Troy plays bass and does a few vocals. This guy has a set of pipes, if you ask me. He appeared on "The Band Kept Playing'" with the Electric Flag when they re-formed for a 'comeback' which apparantly was never meant to be....

Anyway, neat stuff...
