What's in your play list for those dark days...
«

I've recently discovered that I'm captivated by some dark and depressive music at times. I don't often relate to the lyrics, but I'm transfixed by the emotion that comes accross in these compositions.
Here are a few titles that define what I'm speaking about:
Radio Head - Creep
Ben Harper - Another Lonely Day
Gary Jules - Mad World
I've disovered these based on my reading on Audio Circle
Now I want more! So what do you play when you're craving dark, somber, emotional music?
Thanks!

I try not to enhance any dark moods on the occasion when they come about. When I was younger (teenager) and fighting with girlfriends, the hot CD to listen was Aldo Nova's self titled album. This album was all about failed relationships.
Now I have been happly married for over 10 years and haven't listen to this album for some time

Neutral milk hotel - aeroplane over the sea - one of the best albums ever, it's very raw and emotional
Broken social scene- you forgot it in people - not always dark, but very involving

I listen to a fair amount of darker stuff. It looks like you're enjoying a softer side of dark (no, not Sears). Mine tends to be harder, but here are a couple of suggestions that might fit your interests:
The Gathering - Sleepy Buildings (particularly tracks like Amity and Saturnine)
Johnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes Around (cover of NIN's Hurt is terrific, plus other great tracks - mostly not dark)

The Cure. I don't think I have a copy of "Faith" anymore, but that album always seemed extremely fitting in depressed times. Also "Disintegration" (I still think of this as one of the great albums of the 90s), which manages to drag you between maudlin (e.g. Prayers for Rain) and a state of utter fury (e.g. Fascination Street) in a matter of minutes. Even the positive poppiness of "Lovesong" can't change the feel of this album.
A more recent option: Beck's "Sea Change." It's pure, unadulterated misery. But it's pretty good.

I listen to most of the stuff already listed even when I'm in a good mood! One artist that definately deserves a mention in this catagory is Morrisey, solo and with the Smiths. His lyrics are often depressing and humorous at the same time. It would be hard for me to pick a favorite album as he has had many great ones. My favorite song, however, is "There is a light that never goes out" found in the Smiths "The Queen is Dead" CD.

Gesualdo, any of his madrigals. He is almost atonal at times. 100's of years before atonality.
BTW when he caught his wife in bed with another man he cut off both their heads and mounted them on pikes on his castle walls.
due to Being Italian, a count, and the times, he went unpunished.
But his music is beautiful, dark and eirie.
Dark enough for you

Soundbitten,
I think your humor is being under-appreciated. I about fell on the floor with the Beach Boys.
