small chassis tube integrated
« on: 15 Nov 2006, 03:17 pm »
Hi All,

Looking for a small chassis (bedroom system) tube integrated, in the 1K neighborhood, though I suppose I could go above that if convinced that it was worthwhile.   Suggestions?

Thanks.

Small, excellent build quality and great sound. How can you beat the Onix?

If you have only one source, then the Decware amp would work: http://www.decware.com/newsite/SE84C.htm

If you have more than a single source, then the Decware integrated: http://www.decware.com/newsite/SE34I.htm

If yo need only 10 watts, there is few things sweeter for the money than 6V6 integrated monoblocks...

They play a lot bigger than 10, so don't scoff at the output unless you need a lot more for inefficient speakers or a very large bedroom  :)

I see the Sophia Electric Baby on audiogon all the time.  Maybe that's a bad sign, though.  I've never heard it, but have always been intrigued.

There are about six of them listed on audiogon right now, between $375 and $450.

If you are looking for new, I might suggest the factory modified Jolida 102b.

How about a Scott 222c or a Heathkit (EL84 based)?  These integrateds can sound wonderful if properly refurbished and they don't take up too much space.  Mapleshade does a good job.  Heaths are around $675 and Scotts are $975.  I'm very happy with my Scott.

Good luck!

Hi:
I had posted a similar question and learned from Bill O'Connell of Morningstar Audio, importer of Eastern Electric and a very helpful and nice man that they are about to bring in a new Mini integrated based on the 6BM8 tube.  He sent me some pics to share.

There is 8 big watts per, solid state rectification and a remote for all you couch potatoes.   Pricing I was told will be $950 USD

Hope this helps
BTW - I am just a happy customer and not affiliated.

I really want to get one again, but I'm hoping to find one of the originals.  Seems like almost everything I see for sale now is a Mk II.

Just curious, what is different between the Mk I and the Mk II?

I'm not really sure.  People have asked Mark repeatedly over the months, and despite promising to investigate and get back to us, to date I don't think anyone knows.  I'm sure the MK II of the amp is still nice, but from some people who've looked at the guts, there are supposedly some differences.  I know the old one was fantastic (since I had one), and it got rave reviews, which may or may not apply to the new version.

the sophia baby is amazing - loved it and upgraded to the el34, which beats the sp3 all around.
