Newcomer to this circle
« on: 15 Nov 2006, 12:33 am »
I'll get in the line but I wanted to introduce myself (draw attention to...) before doing so. I contribute occasionally to the techy circles in a very timid way, being very far down on the equipment scale these days. Over the years I have collected a lot of Cd's and LPs. I make no apologies for the fact that my interest has always been as much the quality of the recordings as their musical content. I do not enjoy badly recorded music, no matter how good it may be performed and I will only be posting what sounds good or even great. I spent a lot of time and money over the years to educate my ears and my musical taste! You may or may not agree with the latter but if I tell you an album sounds good you can believe me! I do apologize if some of my offerings are very difficult to find. That's not my fault but the nature of the recording industry these past years. You will notice that many records come from the 80's, when I had the bread and was lucky to live in a place where you could still listen carefully on decent equipment before buying.
Tonight I listened to the following: Amanda McBroom "Dreaming", 1986 Gecko Records distributed then
"only to audiophile stores by Monster Cable Products". A SUPER recording, very interesting music bitter/sweet. This will be a bitch to find! (I'll restrain my language) was both LP and Cd.
Steve Khan "Public Access" Another wonderfull sounding CD, my favorite of his. This one you can still get.
89' GRP records
A truly amazing CD (LP too but forget finding it) from the Great Rickie Lee Jones, the Little Album or more accurately, "Girl at her Volcano" Warner Bros. records 83' Uneven recording but who cares when you have
an artist like this! (I DO make exceptions when the heart is stirred this much)
Finally another difficult one, even here in Europe. Ron Carter/Richard Galliano "Panamanhattan", 1991, Capitale Jazz, Fnac Music. The Fnac is a chain of stores like Tower Records. They might still have it in stock somewhere. This is a really magic duo, natural sounding although the bass is a bit over-miked.
Good listening. I'll continue to contribute unless I'm booted for being opinionated!

Thank you. I am amazed that these records can still be found and I had no idea that Amanda MAcB
had made other albums. I'm pretty new to the art of Google and I live in the boondocks. I would like to make some serious contributions with my vinyl collection. I KNOW some of these will be absolutely off the edge of the world rare. Just for the record, I don't have to tell any body how we had to suffer for years from bad pressings: recycled vinyl, warped, pressed in noise etc. It wasn't until the end that the demand for better quality created a short-lived reaction from people like Sheffield, Nautlus half-speed masters
and the famous JVC pressings from Japan, to name a few. Virgin Vinyl and 18O gram weight were other ways to get our attention. By then it was too late and CD had taken command. It's absolutely amazing that turntables and et al have not only survived but made a comeback of sorts. I haven't bought an LP in years but I'm assuming they are still being pressed. So it was hit or miss. You might have a great sound/record or you might have a nearly unplayable frustration. Since I no longer own a turntable, I have to look at the records, then close my eyes and try to remember my Maggies!
Here's the beginning of a long list of favorites. I'll piece it out so as not to bore you! (opinionated old sod)
PS all of these sound good and some are glorious
David Grisman Quintet '80 Warner Bros. The beginning of the Blue Grass revival movement I think. Delightful music
Barbara Thompson's Paraphenalia, the live concert  MCA records '80 and Pure Fanasy '84 on a great german label Verabra. She and Jane Ira Bloom turned me on to women artists other than singers.
Splendid inventive cross-over jazz
All of early Andy Narrel on Hip Pocket. Super sound, nice music.
And finally (for today), a treasured disk which I've never found on CD (help??) Eric Gale, "Touch of Silk"
'80 on CBS. I love this record. I played right thru the vinyl to the other side!
Later. Gotta go pick up my car at the garage

Was that a slap on the wrist I felt? Sorry to be so professorial. Comes with age and not having shared this stuff for years. Should I slink away in shame? NO WAY! Ok so everything is out there somewhere. Is that the message? So much the better.
A few more LP's before diner?
The queen of outrageous, punk/goth/gore whatever, but with a voice and talent and a great backing group
Nina Hagen...her first two albums. It's down hill from there.
She was too wild even for her German rocker band and they split. They being a group called Spliff.
I have their first album called "The spliff radio Show" '80, CBS It's really good. I think there was a 2nd.
I was and am a big fan of Cal Tjader, Latin in general. He made a lot of good albums. My two favorites being; "Guarabe" '76 Fantasy records and "Cal tjader at grace cathedral" '76 likewise on Fantasy.
Finally (will he never quit?) an album that I adore from a label that made many many great recordings,
MPS, Stu Goldberg, "eye of the beholder"
Ahh! (take this Google) anybody remember King Pleasure? (then you're older than me) Out of the blue after giving up, I happened upon a re-issue/compil. somewhere. It's called "The Source" on Prestige. Two
LP set. The year is '72. Ignore me, deride me, heap abuse but GET THIS! Bon appetit

David Grisman Quintet

This is one of my styles - acoustic string-band jazz, folk, bluegrass, "Americana"

So let's definitely compare notes on this stuff...

Thanks. Just bread and soup and serious annoyance. My new modded cd player is sick and sulky and wants to go back to the UK. Kind of dumb, talking about LPs that I can't hear! Where I live, MP3 players and boom boxes are the sound level and mostly all you hear is foxes barking, owls hunting at midnight and the occasional cow protesting at something. I guess I'm over-sensitive. This forum is full of inner circles, people who know each other, private language. It's hard not to feel like an intruder sometimes...I've omitted classical stuff and world music from my musings. It just gets too vast; endless lists.
I was dead serious about that King Pleasure album! Question for you; whatever happened to Leon Russel?
I have some early LPs. He wrote some of the best songs ever, classics. Today's offerings are:
rarity...two albums released side by side, one called "mystified, the other "soft focus", featuring Joe Henderson, Tom Grant and others '79 on a short-lived Dutch label Ti. Jazz soulfull. Another that I played to death and will look again if it was released on CD: Neil Larsen "Jungle Fever" '78 Horizon Records. Crossover? and my oldest one of all "Gary Burton Quartet in Concert" live at Carnegie Hall, '68, RCA.
This is a wonderful performance, typical early RCA sound. Actually, and to close this topic, since I don't have anything else of real interest to share with you, my favorite record of all time, my desert island one,
the most haunting and powerful: the year is 1958 (which is strange because on the bottom it says "copyright '63) the label is World Pacific, the vinyl is heavy, the artist is the young and newly discovered Ravi Shankar. The title is "India's Master Musician". I know of no other performance, musical moment, like it of any kind. (seriously opinionated)
Thanks for the link to Gemm. Now to figure out how to sell my early Sheffield's and that Ricky album so I can buysome new speakers and silence the owls!

Neil Larsen "Jungle Fever" '78 Horizon Records.

Wow   :o someone else who likes Neil Larson, nay who even knows who Neil Larson is, I think he is Nicolette Larson's brother? (No, different spelling)

I recorded this very album off of FM onto a cassette many moons ago. It has since been destroyed by time and wear and tear. Never have found any of his stuff in any store but I almost ordered it once, so I know it was on CD.

Excellent fusion.

I totally agree, this duo is magic.  Please let me know if there are more recordings like this.  The bass doesn't even sound that overmiked if you sit really far off axis ;)  Who cares, this is my kind of easy listening!
