Blown Away By the 4B-SST
« on: 7 Nov 2006, 10:22 pm »
I just purchased a 4B-SST after using 4B-ST amps for 5-6 years and
I am blown away by the improvements over the 4B-ST.

Less boomy and tighter bass, fuller midrange and treble, and I believe
a larger soundstage. With the 4B-ST's I used to listen in Dolby IIx
to fill-in the fronts, but I find the 4B-SST in stereo has a similar effect.

Any other ST-holdouts should really give the SST series a listen.

I agree, the SST line (3Bsst in my case) is a significant improvement over the older ST series, which I did not care for. The SST's high frequency response in particular is much better.

I agree.  At one point I had the 4BST driving my Thiel 7.2s in a large room.  As Bryston was slow getting into HT, I switched to another brand and then later bought a 6BSST used for the front channels.  I was even further impressed when I moved that to the center and rears and put the 14BSST in its place.

The 4B SST is an amazing amp.  It replaced my NAD C372 integrated amp in my system.  The low bass with the Bryston is a huge improvement over the NAD.  IMO the 4B SST amp is the best value among the amps that Bryston makes and it easily competes with amps costing twice as much.

Best,

John

If you 're familiar with a live performance that have their sound adjusted properly. The SST has that live like quality in the highs. However I only get these highs in muli-channel stereo with speakers set to small, YMMV. As I said before when I first heard this airy halographic highs it was foreign to me as I had never heard this before even from the ST amp.
When I play a good sacd, it has that presence feel to it and I can't imagine that if I were sitting at the actual event that it would be significantly better.
CD's sound great too, but don't exhibit the presence quality as well.

I don't claim to have "golden ears", however I am confident to say the comments above are true - tighter bass, not as boomy, much cleaner top end ie: cymbals, more precise soundstage and more air between instruments.  This is based on 18 months of listening to PMC FB1's with a 4BST, and only about 4 hours with the 4BSST so far.

I've never heard the FB1+, but have been told the high frequency response is smoother, less harsh and "metallic" sounding than the FB1.  I would say the improved top end of the SST has given a similar effect, and the FB1's sound absolutely beautiful now.
