Cool, Small, Project Boxes
« on: 7 Nov 2006, 03:12 am »
Hiya Guys,

Just got my Circuit Specialists flyer in the mail today and noticed that have some pretty cool little project boxes.

These are small, split case aluminum enclosures that range in size from 4.3 x 2.6 x 1.5 up to 8.5 x 6.5 x 3. These are small enough for a DAC or phono stage, maybe a headphone amp all the way up to a small amplifier.

I've seen these boxes up close as my Graham Slee phonostage and headphone amp use them (Graham has since changes box mfgrs). The prices range from about $12 to $32 which isn't too bad.

Oh and just in case you don't have a decent soldering station, you need to buy one of these. They are fabamundo:thumb: (oh, and they're only $35 clams)

Just thought I'd share :green:

Actually, the ones Scott mentioned are LMB Heegers (if not, they're Consite/Context Engineering which you can sometimes get from Fry's). The ones from Parts Express are from Penn Fabrications, which come in more limited and different sizes.
You can also get the Heegers in Black, directly from Heeger, among others, at a slightly higher price.

Sure enough, they look like the Heeger's. Actually, the Heeger's are slightly cheaper than Circuit Specialists.  :thumb:

Here is a project I built using the Heeger boxes. Easy to machine, and my wife does not mind them, unlike some other stuff that I have built.

I use the CSI2 soldering station from Circuit Specialists. It works very well. The one I originally bought died on me within a few months, but Circuit Specialists promptly sent me a new one, which has been working without any problems.

I just ordered some soldering tips from Circuit Specialists and picked up one of those enclosures.  They are made by Context Engineering and seem very solid.  The split makes them very accessible for work.  I'm not crazy about the brushed silver finish, but it's a very good box for not a lot of $.  I think Vinnie once used the black version for the Clari-T.

I think my favorite for the money is the Lansing enclosures that Hagerman uses.  They are so smooth and come in many sizes and have many options (side vents, etc.). 8)
