November jam?
« on: 31 Oct 2006, 06:26 pm »
Greetings all!

I know there is a Lonestar Bottlehead meet this weekend in San Antonio, and others have been having informal mini-meets over the past few months, but it has been a while since we had a more organized get-together.  RMAF is now over, but the holidays are coming up fast.  I'm sure this will only make people's lives more hectic, so I thought it might be a good idea to look into a meet before the craziness takes over for real.

Is anyone interested in hosting a jam in the not too distant future?  If so, let us know what you'd like people bring in terms of gear, music, munchies or anything else!

Brian,

I just typed this reply using Exploder so the problem is with an ancient version of Netscape.

If you can't find anyone else to host, I'll volunteer (though it's only been 9 months since the last major jam). If I host, we'd probably want to scrounge together/borrow an additional 2-channel setup (or two) in another room  to supplement  the dedicated (but still tubeless) Home Theater/stereo/multichannel SACD/DVD-A room .  You are running short of dates.  The best dates for me (assuming all day affair) are Sunday Nov 12, and Saturday, Nov. 18.  Thanksgiving weekend is probably good for me as well, but probably not for most folks.

This coming weekend is good too but that's rather short notice.

Hi Oscar!

I've talked to a few people that are probably able to host sometime after the holidays, but it looks like you might be the only one able to host before then.  If you are still willing, go ahead and post what dates/times work from you and we'll see how things look.

Thanks!

Okay, I throw out two dates:

Nov. 16, Sat, (12noon to 6pmish or whenever)

and/or

Dec. 2. Sat (12noon to ?)

This Saturday is rather short notice.  I'd have to scramble to get ready and I'm in the middle of breaking in a Dodd Preamp.  I also have integration issues to deal with (current "usable" ICs aren't long enough so i'm using a temporary ad-lib set-up in the meantime.  If this is the only good date for a few people, that would be fine.  I know a couple missed the last gathering I had.

December 2 might give people more notice but it's also closer to the Christmas Holidays (and close to an on-going DAC event on Dec. 9).

If y'all want to come over on either/both dates, just let me know. Suggested theme:  Suggest/demonstrate ways to make my system less bright.

Hi Oscar.

I'm one of those that missed your last jam.  I can probably make either date, although I'd probably prefer the 2nd by a small margin.  (BTW, I assume you meant Saturday, November 18th.)

Of course, I guess I should ask what part of town you live in...

Regarding your overly bright system... can you describe your sytem at the moment, and how is your room treated?  I can bring some 8 ft Straley Speaker cables and/or my BPT 3.5 Sig power conditioner if you'd like to try either of those.

Okay, this week has been plenty hectic, so I'm going to postpone until Dec. 2 (which is two weeks from this Saturday.

2-channel system is:
 kern-modded SCD-777ES (I have mostly SACDs) > Kimber Select KS1030 IC > Dodd Battery Powered-Preamp > Tara Air-3 IC > Classe CA-400 > KS3035 > Vienna Acoustic Mahlers

I will be replacing the Tara Air-3 with something better - for now maybe a Cardas RCA/XLR adapter w/ KS1121 XLR IC.  Previous 2-channel included Meitner Multichannel preamp with XLRs to amp.  I'm still trying to figure out the best way to integrate both preamps into the system.

Replacing the CA400 amp with the Dodd 120W monoblocks did wonders....

I'll work on "cheapie" DIY room treatments over Thanksgiving.

Toss in Sound Applications Reference Line Stage line conditioner for every component except the Power amps and Dodd Preamp (battery power removes AC grunge factor).

Hey folks,

I'd like to attend if you're still considering Dec 2nd.  I'd be happy to bring some beer or vino.  Per my post a few weeks ago, I'd like to meet up with some fellow audiophiles in the area.   In addition, I can bring along a PS Audio power amp or pre-amp if anyone is interested....

I'm still game for Dec 2.  I don't expect a lot a bodies but what the hey.  I had an issue with the Dodd Preamp, but that got resolved.  I just sprung for some 7308s to replace the 6922s.  I seemed to notice the midrange was a bit better defined; and it seems to have made it sound more "solid-state" -like.  Or....there's a continuing break-in process. I'll re-roll the tubes after a 100 hours or so just to check things out; though I'm not sure what's the point of "tube-rolling" if it's clear one tube is superior to another.

I gotta add a tubed amp but that's not in the budget at the moment ...  :(

Hi Guys,

I'm 95% sure I'd be able to attend for a few hours.

I could bring any two or three of the following:
Cary SLI-80 Integrated tube amp
Llano hybrid amp
Adcom GFP-750 pre amp
Cary CD 303
Old style Rega Planet
Creek passive pre amp
Spendor S5c speakers

I'll re-read for updates.

Thanks......

Howdy fellow Texans/Oklahomans,

I unfortunately have to work this weekend and will be stuck in Wichita Falls during that time.  If there is anything that you folks want to demo, just let me know, and I'll see if Danny Richie is going down there and has any room to carry extra equipment with him.  I have a Sonographe SA250 amp, Kinergetics Research C200 amp, Monarchy Audio SM 70 amp, Plinius CD-LAD preamp, several DACs, a cute little Ming Da integrated tube amp, just let me know.

Thanks,

Chris

Just change the shipping address to my home (send me a PM).  I'll help you break them in just in time for the jam.  :)

Okay, head count was at three (3); I think it went up to five (5) with the recent postings.  As some of you know, I have rather large, mostly empty living room for 2nd room listening if enough gear shows up (do need speakers unless I cannibalize my rear channel VA Mahlers for the living room).  Last time we had enough gear for 4/5 setups.

For my main system, my wishlist for experimentation include:
DAC - (Sony kern-modded 777ES should make a decent transport)
warmer-sounding stereo amp/monoblocks (speakers need plenty of power too).
6922 pinched waist amperex doohickeys (for Dodd preamp)

BYO source players/TT/amps/preamps/cables/speakers.

This time I'm going 100% catered. (Pizza ? / wings ?) I'm taking suggestions.

I should be able to make it, depending on the time.  Do we have one set?

(If I missed it in this thread, I apologize... I just returned to town from the holiday a few hours ago and only had time for the fastest possible skimming of AC.)

Oscar, let me know if you have any interest in the BPT or Straley speaker cables.

Hi Oscar,

1. Where is this audio round-up?
2. What are the hours?
3. Beer/pizza/wings sounds fine to me.

Thanks,
Ed
